POSITION SUMMARY
Roe Environmental Inc. is seeking Marine Mammal Observers (MMOs) and Hydroacoustic Technicians to support environmental monitoring during construction of a marine terminal at the Woodfibre LNG Project near Squamish, BC.
MMOs will conduct visual observations for marine mammals; Hydroacoustic Technicians will deploy and operate hydrophone monitoring equipment. These are dedicated roles, though candidates with experience in both disciplines, or an interest in developing cross-functional skills, may be considered interchangeable.
Certain construction periods will require long hours at monitoring stations on barges, vessels, and land-based shelters. Opportunities may also arise to diversify into environmental technician roles, including construction monitoring, water quality sampling, wildlife surveys, and erosion and sediment control inspections.
POSITION TERM
Positions available for start dates in June, July and August. All positions with a temporary contract to February 2026.

POSITION LOCATION
The position will involve monitoring on the Woodfibre LNG project in Squamish, BC. Candidates from outside of the immediate Squamish area can expect to be housed in a private room on the Floatel (converted cruise ship) moored on site during their shift.
REQUIREMENTS
- Canadian residency or current/valid work permit is required- international applicants without Canadian residency or work permit will not be considered
- Position to require shift work - typically 2 weeks on, 1 week off.
- Position will require both day and night shift
- Normal working days are likely to be up to 10 - 12 hours.
PREFERRED CAPABILITIES
- Marine mammal observer or wildlife monitoring experience.
- Familiarity with whale and pinniped species identification.
- Knowledge of bioacoustics and hydrophone operation (an asset; training will be provided).
- Comfortable working on vessels and in outdoor environments for extended periods, year-round.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working within a large, multidisciplinary monitoring team and liaising with clients and contractors.
- Strong data collection and record-keeping skills.
- Experience on active construction sites.
- Field experience in aquatic biology (fish/amphibian surveys, habitat assessment), terrestrial wildlife and bird surveys (breeding birds, raptors, species at risk), or vegetation assessment.
PREFERENCES GIVEN TO CANDIDATES WITH
- Priority placement will be given to (1) Squamish Nation members and (2) Indigenous candidates with demonstrated experience, competency, and a good safety track record.
- Priority placement will be given to residents of Squamish, Whistler and the Vancouver North Shore.
COMPENSATION
- $27/hour - $33.00/hour based on experience and qualifications
- 30% increase on hourly rate for all night shift work
- Overtime per provincial standards (1.5x over 8hrs, 2x over 12hrs)
