About the Position
Explore Edmonton is looking for a Carpenter to join the Maintenance team at the Edmonton Convention Centre. Reporting directly to the Manager, Maintenance, this position is responsible for performing skilled carpentry, repair, maintenance, and construction work to support the safe, reliable, and event-ready operation of the facility. Typical daily activities include preventative and corrective maintenance, facility repairs, renovations, inspections, responding to work orders, and supporting the maintenance of building components, fixtures, furnishings, and infrastructure. This role works closely with maintenance staff, contractors, and internal stakeholders to ensure the Edmonton Convention Centre remains safe, functional, and ready to support daily operations and events.
What You’ll Do:
- Perform preventative and corrective maintenance, repairs, and renovation work throughout the Edmonton Convention Centre.
- Install, repair, modify, assemble, and maintain building components, furnishings, fixtures, equipment, and facility infrastructure.
- Respond to work orders and service requests, assess issues, determine corrective actions, and complete repairs in a timely manner.
- Conduct routine inspections of facility assets and identify maintenance requirements, deficiencies, and improvement opportunities.
- Repair and restore interior building elements, including walls, ceilings, floors, trim, doors, frames, and related architectural components.
- Complete drywall repairs, surface preparation, finishing work, and painting as required.
- Install, adjust, maintain, and repair doors, frames, hardware, hinges, closers, and locking mechanisms.
- Support facility renovations, modifications, and event-related infrastructure requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of completed work, materials used, and asset information through the maintenance management system.
- Collaborate with maintenance staff,
contractors, event operations, custodial teams, and other stakeholders to support facility readiness and operational requirements.
- Identify and report safety hazards, building deficiencies, and operational risks.
- Follow all applicable safety procedures, policies, and regulatory requirements while maintaining a safe environment for staff, contractors, guests, and clients.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
What You'll Bring:
- Journeyperson Carpenter certification or equivalent trade qualification.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in carpentry, building maintenance, commercial or institutional construction, or a related environment.
- Strong knowledge of carpentry methods, building maintenance practices, and repair techniques.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess issues and determine practical repair solutions.
- Experience interpreting work orders, drawings, and technical instructions.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced, event-driven environment.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively with trades staff, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a high standard of workmanship and attention to detail.
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform frequent standing, bending, kneeling, and physical work throughout the shift.
- Ability to safely operate hand and power tools and work at heights using ladders, lifts, and scaffolding.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors and adapt to changing operational requirements.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, overtime, and flexible schedules as required to support facility and event operations.
