The Town of Ponoka is currently recruiting casual lifeguards.

Position Summary

The Lifeguards reports to the Recreation Coordinator and take daily direction from the Aquatic Lead.

Lifeguards work with colleagues in the Aquaplex to provide quality services to internal and external customers. The team’s work will collectively support the Vision of the Town of Ponoka: To be a thriving community with a hometown feel.

This position supports the team by performing lifeguarding and custodial work, involving responsibility for the safety of all users of a public swimming facility. The Lifeguard follows the established Town of Ponoka policies and procedures to provide a safe, clean, fun environment while adhering to its vision, mission, and values.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities

1. Maintenance Requirements:

- Clean the aquatic area, change room, and staff room.
- Work in accordance with WHMIS, Town Health and Safety, and safe work practices.
- Complete daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance.
- Report on and attend to all incidents, first aid, and work orders, etc. with proper documentation delivered to the Aquatic Lead.
- Communicate with the Aquatic Lead (or designate) on matters pertinent to their shift.

2. First Aid:

- Provide first aid to patrons and other staff.
- Must maintain minimum requirements and stay current on skills and knowledge.
- Complete all appropriate documentation for first aid and incident reporting before leaving shift.

3. Swimming/Fitness Instruction

- Provide swimming lessons.
- Conduct and develop lesson plans for swimming instruction.
- Evaluate students’ performance during instruction and maintain records of performance and attendance.
- Provide screening for patrons unsure of their water safety level.




- Provide fitness instruction or advances aquatic programming when qualified.

4. Lifeguarding:

- Promote a positive perspective and relationship between the public and the Town.
- Provide lifeguarding at the level of National Lifeguard Certification.
- Maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for patrons.
- Maintain fitness level and current certifications at all times.
- Must be able to perform all skills of National Lifeguard Certification at all times.
- Interact with the public in a positive way to educate patrons in safety issues and model appropriate behavior in a pool environment.
- Handle complaints and suggestions in a positive manner.
- Attend and participate in in-services.
- Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the aquatic facility.
- Ensure adequate guarding is in place at all times as per LSS and facility guidelines/procedures.

5. Other:

- Ensure public compliance with facility safety procedures and deal with patrons’ questions and concerns regarding swimming lessons and pool schedules.
- Undertake other duties as assigned by the Aquatic Lead.

Minimum Requirements

Education

Completion of Grade 10

Other

- Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Certification
- Standard First Aid or Aquatic Emergency Care (includes CPR C)
- Current Lifesaving Swim Instructor (LSI) Certification
- Satisfactory background screening is required for this position including a Criminal Record

Working Conditions

- Varying levels of physical effort, including moderate lifting (up to 25 kg), sitting, walking, standing, pushing and pulling, reaching, and carrying. Repetitive motion of office tasks.
