The FireSmart Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the FireSmart program within the Nation. This role includes conducting home and community assessments, delivering wildfire prevention education, coordinating mitigation efforts, and supporting emergency preparedness initiatives. An estimated 20% of this role supports Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) readiness, including planning, coordination, and response support aligned with community emergency management protocols.

This position plays a critical role in enhancing community safety, building awareness, and strengthening wildfire resilience.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

- Conduct FireSmart home assessments and evaluate surrounding properties using FireSmart guidelines.
- Schedule and engage with community members to complete assessments.
- Prepare detailed assessment reports with clear mitigation recommendations.
- Provide practical, easy-to-understand guidance to homeowners on reducing wildfire risk.
- Conduct follow-ups with residents to ensure recommendations are understood and supported.
- Plan and deliver workshops, seminars, and demonstrations on FireSmart principles.
- Develop and share educational materials through community boards, social media, and events.
- Partner with internal departments, schools, and external organizations to promote FireSmart initiatives.
- Provide one-on-one consultations to address specific concerns related to wildfire safety.
- Build and maintain relationships with community leadership and stakeholders.
- Prioritize mitigation activities based on assessment findings.
- Develop and oversee mitigation work plans and schedules.
- Assign tasks and coordinate resources for mitigation crews.
- Provide ongoing training and ensure adherence to FireSmart standards and protected work practices.
- Conduct regular safety briefings and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Support EOC preparedness, activation,



and response activities as required.
- Assist with coordination, documentation, and reporting during emergency events.
- Contribute to emergency planning, training, and exercises.
- Maintain alignment with ICS/IMS principles and Cheam emergency procedures.
- Maintain accurate records of assessments, mitigation activities, and program outcomes.
- Prepare reports and updates for leadership on program progress and community engagement.
- Track program metrics and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Other duties as required to support departmental and organizational priorities.

Qualifications

- FireSmart training (or willingness to obtain) is required.
- WSPP-115 and S-100 certifications are considered assets.
- First Aid Level 1 and Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) training are assets.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License with access to reliable transportation.
- Strong understanding of wildfire prevention, mitigation, and public education principles.
- Experience working with First Nation communities is preferred.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and deliver community-based programs.
- Strong communication, facilitation, and engagement skills.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, Cheam’s culture, traditions, and community values.
- Ability to work respectfully and effectively within an Indigenous community setting.
- Awareness of intergenerational trauma and its impacts.




- Commitment to culturally safe and community-centered service delivery.

Working Conditions:

- Combination of office and outdoor fieldwork, including work in varying weather conditions.
- Occasional evening or weekend work for events or emergency response.
- Employment subject to a clear Criminal Record Check (renewed every five years).
- Required travel within the community.
- Commitment to Cheam First Nation policies, procedures, and values is essential.

Job Type: Fixed term contract
Contract length: 7 months

Pay: $40,000.00-$48,000.00 per year
