Come work with us!

At the City of Leduc, we believe that our natural environment is one of our greatest assets. Our Parks & Open Spaces team is dedicated to ensuring that Leduc remains a beautiful, green, and sustainable community for all residents to enjoy. Behind every healthy canopy in our city is a team of experts committed to the long-term health and safety of our urban forest.

We are currently seeking an Arborist Lead to join our Public Services department. This is a crucial leadership role for a technical expert who thrives on specialized tree care, team mentorship, and strategic seasonal planning. If you are a certified professional looking to leave a lasting mark on a city’s landscape, we want to hear from you.

What is the Opportunity?

Reporting to the Manager, Parks and Open Spaces, the Arborist Lead is the primary technical expert for the management of Leduc’s Urban Forest. You will be responsible for the full spectrum of urban forestry operations—from daily work assignments like pruning and removals to high-level tree risk assessments and the coordination of our annual tree planting programs.

This role exists to ensure the health, safety, and diversity of our city’s tree inventory through evidence-based practices and proactive pest management. You will lead a dedicated tree crew, manage significant maintenance budgets, and oversee the warranty process for hundreds of new plantings each year. This is a high-visibility leadership position where your expertise in arboriculture directly protects our environment and enhances the safety of our public spaces.

What will you do?

In this leadership role, you will coordinate daily operations and drive the strategic health of our urban forest. Key responsibilities include:

- Lead daily tree care operations, including the planning and prioritization of pruning, removals, stump grinding,

and tree hazard mitigations such as cabling and bolting.

- Coordinate the annual tree replacement program, overseeing the tendering and selection process for trees and managing external planting contractors.

- Conduct tree evaluations and risk assessments, identifying potential hazards and implementing mitigation strategies to ensure public safety.

- Manage Integrated Pest Management (IPM) protocols, including the selection and application of fertilizers and herbicides to combat disease and insect outbreaks.

- Supervise and mentor the tree crew staff, participating in the hiring process, conducting performance evaluations, and providing specialized training in arboriculture best practices.

- Monitor contractor performance and development standards, ensuring newly planted trees meet City requirements and overseeing the two-year warranty inspection process.

- Provide expert customer service, responding to resident service requests and inquiries with technical knowledge and a solution-oriented approach.

- Liaise with community groups and regional partners, representing the city on committees such as Communities in Bloom (CIB) and participating in initiatives like Arbor Day and the 2 billion Trees program.

Who you are?

You are a seasoned arboriculture skilled with a growth mindset and the leadership skills to guide a team through demanding seasonal fluctuations. You bring:

- A minimum of five (5) years of experience as a certified Arborist, with at least three (3) years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

- An ISA Arborist Certification (International Society of Arboriculture); a post-secondary diploma or degree in Arboriculture, Urban Forestry, or a related field is highly desired.

- A valid Class 5 driver’s license with a Q (Air Brake) endorsement.

- Technical proficiency in operating 1-ton and larger trucks, bucket trucks/aerial lifts (40–60 ft), skid steers with specialized attachments, and brush chippers.

- Competence in climbing, rigging, and specialized tree care tools (chainsaws, pruners) with a deep commitment to OH&S; standards.

- Strong organizational skills to manage a rotating workload of tree inspections, warranty monitoring, and emergency hazard responses.

- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide professional recommendations to management and interact positively with the public.

- A Pesticide Applicators License, along with current Standard First Aid and WHMIS certifications.

What we Offer?

Working for the City of Leduc means joining a leadership team that values technical expertise, environmental stewardship, and professional integrity. In this role, we offer:

- Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits, including a defined benefit pension plan (LAPP), extended health supports, and paid time off.

- A senior leadership role with real impact, where you will manage a substantial tree maintenance budget and shape the future of Leduc’s urban canopy.

- Opportunities for professional growth, including support for advanced certifications and the chance to lead major environmental grant initiatives.

- A collaborative and value-driven workplace, where your expert advice is respected and your contributions to the community are visible every day.
