Job Synopsis
This Canada Summer Jobs position supports the mission of MCC Thrift & Gift by managing inventory flow in a fast-paced thrift retail environment. The Associate works primarily in the workroom and receiving area—unloading vehicles, sorting and pricing donated goods, and maintaining product flow to the retail floor—while also assisting with cashier duties, merchandising, and shop maintenance as needed. Working collaboratively with shop Managers and Leads, the Associate helps create a welcoming, values-driven customer experience that reflects MCC's commitment to faithful stewardship, community care, and global justice.
This is a 10-week contract position at 35 hours/week.

This role is based at 59 Church St W, Elmira, ON.
Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada for the duration of their employment. Successful candidates will be required to provide a Police Background Check upon hire.

Qualifications

Required
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and exert 11–25 lbs. of force frequently
- Ability to stand or walk intermittently for 7+ hours in a standard workday
- Ability to repeatedly bend, stoop, and reach upper shelves using a stool or ladder as necessary
- Availability to work varied retail hours, including evenings and Saturdays
- Basic computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, Internet)
- Police Vulnerable Sector Check (required upon hire)
Preferred
- Experience working with volunteers
- Awareness of second-hand market, retail trends, and merchandising
- Knowledge of antiques and collectibles
Key Responsibilities
General
- Serve as a brand ambassador for MCC mission and values by providing excellent customer service to donors and customers
- Support Managers and Leads in meeting daily operational demands
- Greet customers and donors, respond to inquiries, and assist with special events and projects as needed
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff and volunteers
Workroom and Retail
- Unload donor vehicles and sort, clean, and price donated goods across various departments
- Ensure smooth flow of inventory from receiving to retail floor while maintaining compliance with donation acceptance policies
- Assist with kitchen responsibilities (set up, clean up, etc.)
- Identify antiques, collectibles, and unique items for review by appropriate management
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe workspaces in receiving, workroom, seasonal storage, and retail areas in accordance with health and safety standards
- Manage recycling, garbage, and waste disposal in coordination with staff
Retail & Customer Service
- Operate POS system for transactions, returns, and cash coverage as needed
- Assist with merchandising, stocking, and maintaining product displays on the sales floor

- Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ's unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized
- Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and general public; communicate MCC's values, articulating the importance of MCC's criteria for workers, all of whom serve as representatives of the Mennonite and Be in Christ churches which support MCC
- Model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful daily interactions with staff and the public

Base salary: $19.6. Hourly rate of $19.60 plus 6% vacation pay added to each pay deposit
