Description
The Department of Medicine and the Division of Neurology at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital is looking for a Neuromuscular Clinician-Investigator.
The Division of Neurology has over 40 Neurologists and is renowned for delivery of outstanding care and recognized internationally for its programs, including neuromuscular, multiple sclerosis, neuro-ophthalmology, movement disorders, headache, epilepsy and stroke. Members of the Division have a wide range of clinical and basic science research skills. Their work includes cutting edge clinical trials, translational research, and epidemiology. In addition to modern out-patient clinical units, the Division has a 20-bed inpatient general neurology unit, 24 bed stroke inpatient unit and consult services at both the Civic and General campuses of TOH.
The Ottawa Hospital is a 1150 bed tertiary-care hospital serving Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec at four inpatient sites (Civic, General, Heart Institute, and the Rehabilitation Centre) and one ambulatory centre (Riverside). There are approximately 50,000 inpatient admissions, 160,000 emergency visits and over one million outpatient visits annually. Ground-breaking medical research is conducted through The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. We rank 5th in Canada for competitive, peer-reviewed grants from the prestigious Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Over 2,300 researchers are publishing more than 2,200 studies yearly, with hundreds being high-impact publications (top 10% or citations).
The Department of Medicine is a research-intensive Department. Members currently hold 25 University Research Chairs. The Department receives approximately $60 million per year in external research funding and members publish approximately 1200 peer-reviewed publications annually.
The Faculty of Medicine is a nationally recognized leader, ranked among Canada’s top-tier medical faculties. Responsibilities
The successful candidate will work under the general direction of the Head of the Division of Neurology, Department of Medicine at the Ottawa Hospital/University of Ottawa. The individual will be expected to participate in: 1) outpatient neuromuscular disorder clinics, 2) electrodiagnostic studies (Canadian EMG certified), 3) rotate on the neurology inpatient and neurology consultation services, 4) participate in neurology academic activities, 5) teach medical students, residents and fellows in outpatient and inpatient settings, 6) the neurology on-call rotation on a regular basis, 7) investigator-led and pharmaceutical clinical trials. Preference will be given to a candidate with an interest in acquired peripheral neuropathies.
The successful candidate will join a group of nationally and internationally recognized neuromuscular neurologists. The successful candidate would work in the NeuroMuscular Centre, a large clinical research centre with clinical, electrodiagnostic testing and dedicated clinical-research space. This is an established clinical research group conducting investigator-led translational research as well as clinical trials and industry supported research. The neuromuscular program has 8 full time neuromuscular neurologists and 5 part time neurologists/physiatrists, 5 administrative assistants, 4 EMG technologists, and 13 full/part-time clinical research coordinators as well as graduate students.
The neuromuscular group is part of the Eric Poulin Centre for Neuromuscular Disease and University of Ottawa Brain and Mind Institute, bringing together basic scientists and clinicians from across the academic environments to focus on clinical, and translational research in neuromuscular conditions.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a neurologist with a minimum of one year of fellowship training in neuromuscular disorders as well as evidence of a successful neuromuscular research program.
Applicants must possess significant neuromuscular-focused research experience with a demonstrated record of strong scientific achievement in their field. Evidence of excellence will include publications in leading, peer-reviewed journals, success in securing external funding (e.g., operating grants), presentations at major conferences and recognition through awards or distinctions. Candidates must demonstrate the potential to develop an independent and impactful research program within an equitable and inclusive environment. Additional contributions that enhance the visibility and advancement of the division are also highly valued.
The successful candidate must hold an MD degree; be a member of, or be eligible to be a member of, the Canadian Medical Protective Association; have, or be eligible for, certification in neurology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. The successful candidate will be eligible to hold an academic appointment at the rank of an Assistant Professor or higher at the University of Ottawa. Academic rank will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital are bilingual institutions and therefore in the case of potentially successful candidates of equal ability, a bilingual (French/English) candidate would be preferred.
