This animal care technician role will provide support to the cat and
kitten teams that work out of the shelter. This will include working
with volunteers and our registered veterinary technicians. This is an
excellent chance for a student considering a career in the animal
welfare field, veterinary medicine or animal care fields.

Tasks for this position include working with volunteers to provide daily
food, water and medications for all cats and kittens housed at the
shelter. The student will receive training in cat and kitten
handling, socialization and care. Under the direction and guidance of
staff and volunteers, the student will learn and implement proper
sanitation protocols to ensure animal and human health, methods for
providing medication to cats and kittens as well as general shelter
maintenance tasks such as cleaning, stocking the kitchen and animal care
rooms with supplies, laundry and general upkeep. The student in this
role will also work with kittens in foster homes and learn the medical
and care protocols for good kitten health.

Customer relations, communication and problem-solving will be an
important part of this role. The student will also be trained in
procedures, information and skills needed to interact with the public
that come to the shelter for assistance. This student will learn how to
field inquiries, respond in a polite, calm, respectful manner when
members of the public may be experiencing a stressful situation and
assess how to refer them to the appropriate staff or volunteer depending

on their reason for attending the shelter. They will also learn how to
interact with donors who bring animal food and donations to the shelter,
ensuring their contributions are appropriately recognized and recorded.
They will also be involved in greeting potential adopters for scheduled
meet ups and open houses and ensuring promotional materials such as
brochures and newsletters are available for shelter events. Our humane
education team visits senior homes, and summer children's groups to
promote animal welfare and humane education. This student will also
participate in some of these activities, as skills and interests dictate.

This student may also be trained to use our digital adoption system to
assist staff with updating records, reviewing cat or small animal
adoption/foster applications and adding adoptable animals to the
website. As a part of our animal care team, the cat animal care
technician position will develop teamwork, communication and leadership
skills, showing initiative to ensure our cat and kitten rooms and other
shelter spaces are well stocked with supplies, digital records are
maintained, and proactively raise any concerns or issues to the
