This animal care technician role will provide support to the cat and kitten teams that work out of the shelter. This will include working with volunteers and our registered veterinary technicians. This is an excellent opportunity for a student considering a career in the animal welfare field, veterinary medicine or animal care fields.

Tasks for this position include working with volunteers to provide daily food, water and medications for all cats and kittens housed at the shelter. The student will receive training in cat and kitten handling, socialization and care. Under the direction and guidance of staff and volunteers, the student will learn and implement proper sanitation protocols to ensure animal and human health, methods for providing medication to cats and kittens as well as general shelter maintenance tasks such as cleaning, stocking the kitchen and animal care rooms with supplies, laundry and general upkeep.

The student in this role will also work with kittens in foster homes and learn the medical and care protocols for good kitten health.

Customer relations, communication and problem-solving will be an important part of this role. The student will also be trained in procedures, information and skills needed to interact with the public that come to the shelter for assistance. This student will learn how to field inquiries, respond in a polite, calm,
respectful manner when members of the public may be experiencing a stressful situation and assess how to refer them to the appropriate staff or volunteer depending on their reason for attending the shelter.

They will also learn how to interact with donors who bring animal food and donations to the shelter,

ensuring their contributions are appropriately recognized and recorded.

They will also be involved in greeting potential adopters for scheduled meet ups and open houses and ensuring promotional materials such as brochures and newsletters are available for shelter events. Our humane education team visits senior homes, and summer children's groups to promote animal welfare and humane education. This student will also participate in some of these activities, as skills and interests dictate.

This student may also be trained to use our digital adoption system to assist staff with updating records, reviewing cat or small animal adoption/foster applications and adding adoptable animals to the website. As a part of our animal care team, the cat animal care technician position will develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills, showing initiative to ensure our cat and kitten rooms and other shelter spaces are well stocked with supplies, digital records are maintained, and proactively raise any concerns or issues to the appropriate staff. The successful candidate will possess tact,

maturity, adaptability, positive communication skills and a passion for animal welfare and community service that will be honed and strengthened by this experience.

Job Type: Seasonal

Contract length: 8 weeks
nPay: $17.60 per hourn
Expected hours: 35 per week
