DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Our perfusion department offers state‑of‑the‑art equipment, data management systems, and an experienced team of Perfusionists and a Perfusionist Assistant to assist new team members.
The team benefits from inter‑professional dynamics, affiliations with the Michener Institute, and a reasonable on‑call schedule allowing flexibility in balancing work‑life.
The successful incumbent will perform technical duties in the maintenance and operation of cardiovascular perfusion and related equipment for a variety of surgical and therapeutic procedures, working collaboratively with the health‑care team to achieve excellence in patient care and provide expert perfusion consultation to patients and families.

Key Functions
Perform technical duties involved in the maintenance and operation of cardiovascular perfusion and related equipment for a variety of surgical and therapeutic procedures.
Reporting
Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, Cardiodiagnostics and Perfusion.
Duties
- Ensure safe and efficient performance of the heart‑lung machine and related equipment (cell savers, Intra‑Aortic Balloon Pumps, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation, Left Ventricular Assist Devices,
Right Ventricular Assist Devices).
- Prepare and operate the heart‑lung machine and other equipment for open‑heart operations or vascular cases.
- Execute physiological measurements, monitor physiological responses during surgery, and perform other related procedures per established standards.
- Maintain patient physiological parameters during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
- Collect, interpret, record, and report clinical data electronically.
- Transport patients on extracorporeal devices as required.
- Assist with insertion, maintenance, and transfer of patients with IABP, ECMO, LVAD, and RVAD, ensuring availability until stable in ICU.
- Assess, evaluate, and revise cardiovascular perfusion standards based on evidence‑based practice.
- Develop and maintain reference materials related to current practice.
- Provide expert perfusion consultation to patients and families.
- Collaborate with healthcare team to achieve excellence in patient care.
- Participate in the Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) program.
- Organise and prepare patient care plans and departmental workflow daily.
- Provide instruction to perfusion students and orient nursing, respiratory, and other staff on cardiac surgery basics.
- Participate in an on‑call rotation.
- Identify research opportunities by questioning current practices.
- Evaluate patient care and satisfaction, formulate improvement solutions.
- Align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan, monitor and adjust for outcomes.
- Participate in education and training regarding federal and provincial health and safety legislation.
- Educate and promote wellness in the workplace.
- Represent the department on committees and meetings as required.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
Education and Training
- Minimum four‑year Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university.
- Graduate of an accredited Cardiovascular Perfusion program.
- Current Certificate of Registration with the Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion (CSCP) or eligible for certification.
- Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate.
Experience
- Two years’ experience working in a Perfusion department (preferred).
