As an Environmental Public Health Officer you will advocate and provide expertise to Indigenous communities.
Duties
Environmental Public Health Officers work collaboratively with partners to deliver high‑quality health protection services to Indigenous peoples.
They provide advice, education, public health inspections and recommendations to First Nations and their leadership to manage environmental risks.
Frequent travel is required.
Work Environment
The First Nations & Inuit Health Branch delivers services under eight core programmes: Drinking Water, Food Safety, Healthy Housing, Wastewater, Solid Waste Disposal, Facilities Inspection,
Communicable Disease Control and Emergency Preparedness & Response.
Employees will support the transfer of control of Health Services to First Nations and Inuit as required.
Intent of the Process
A partially or fully qualified pool will be established for positions across mainland and remote locations.
Applicants may be assessed for multiple linguistic profiles.
Reliability status security clearance is required.

Essential Qualifications
- Education: Degree in Health Sciences (Public Health), Environmental Public Health or equivalent; or completion of a full‑time instruction in Public Health Inspection or Environmental Public Health; or a combination of education and at least five years experience plus a Certificate in Public Health Inspection.
- Occupational Certification: Certificate in Public Health Inspection (required).
Candidates currently completing the certificate may apply but must have completed it before appointment.
Optional / Asset Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Public Health or related field.
- Current Health and Safety certifications (e.g., CIC, CRSP, CIH, ROHT, OHST, ROH).
- Training in emergency response and infection prevention.
- Experience delivering environmental public health services (inspections, monitoring, education).
- Experience working with First Nation communities.
- Leadership or committee participation.
- Stakeholder engagement experience.
- Briefing and recommendation to management.
- Knowledge of legislation, guidelines and technical information (e.g., Canadian Drinking Water Quality).
- Knowledge of sample collection and test result interpretation.
- Language requirements: English Essential, French Essential, BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC.
Operational & Conditions of Employment
- Willingness to work evenings, weekends, on call, short notice and in remote communities.
- Ability to respond to emergencies.
- Ability to travel alone by vehicle, ATV, float, small plane, boat or helicopter in all weather.
- Maintain valid driver’s licence and CIPHI membership.
- Wearing PPE as required.
- Physical effort including rough terrain, climbing, lifting up to 20 kg.
- Pre‑employment medical declaration may be required.
- Reliability security clearance and unrestricted valid driver’s licence.
