IMPACT WORKER – (Integrated Mobile Police Assessment Crisis Team)

Full time Permanent - 1 Vacancy

6 Month Temporary Full-Time – 1 Vacancy

Rate: $31.33 /hour $33.29/hour (based on experience)

Rotating schedules

12-hour shifts

What is the job?

The IMPACT Worker works alongside with a team member from the Thunder Bay Police to respond to individuals in a mental health crisis and will be situated at the local police station when so scheduled. The IMPACT Worker completes a comprehensive mental health assessment and connects individuals to the appropriate mental health services. The IMPACT Worker also provides follow-up to individuals within 24 hours of the initial crisis intervention. The IMPACT worker will also be scheduled for in office work as required and appropriate, such as administrative/office functions, telephone or regular mobile response.

What will you do day to day?

1. Provide crisis intervention and support services to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis.

2. Work in collaboration with Thunder Bay Police officers by providing guidance and expertise in determining apprehension criteria and or resolution strategies through de-escalation techniques.

3. Provide service information and link individuals, families and friends to community mental health agencies and social service resources.

4. Provide telephone crisis assessment, brief telephone counselling, referrals and follow-up for individuals experiencing a mental health crisis on occasion/when assigned.

5. Determine need for admission to Crisis Safe beds.

Liaise with families and friends, mental health specialists, police, emergency service personnel, and Schedule 1 facilities to assist individuals requiring acute care admission under the Mental Health Act.

7. Coordinate referrals, linkages, and follow-up to appropriate community support services.

8. Maintain up-to-date client information and records in agency client records systems.

9. Ensure all required documentation is completed in a timely fashion

10. Communicate service and client information in accordance with established procedures.

11. Maintain effective working relationships with community agencies, clients, family members, and other mental health specialists as appropriate.

12. Attend and contribute to Crisis Response Service Team meetings and other client-related meetings as required.

13. Ensure safe work methods and practices at all times.

14. Represents the Canadian Mental Health Association, Thunder Bay Branch, in a skilled manner and adheres to standards consistent with the values and philosophy of the Association.

15. Adhering to and promoting CMHA’s Code of Ethics Policy

16. Complying with CMHA’s Health and Safety Policies

17. Complying with Thunder Bay Police Services applicable policies, procedures and protocols.

18. Performs any other tasks related to the position as required.

What do you bring to the job?

- A post-secondary diploma or degree in the Health and Human Services
- Strong background working with individuals with mental illness & addictions
- Good knowledge of community health and other health related social service resources
- Must possess advanced skills in crisis assessments, documentation and intervention strategies and/or possess ASIST




- Experience and knowledge of the criminal justice system is an asset
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Valuable problem solving, teamwork and counseling skills
- Computer and data entry skills (EMHware, OCAN)
- Physically capable to perform job requirements
- Legally eligible to work in Canada
- Valid Class “G” Driver’s License
- Current Police Vulnerable Sector Check & Successful Completion of Thunder Bay Police Security Check
- Must be available for shift work: including days, evenings, nights and weekends.
