Scaling Precision Medicine with PhenoTips At PhenoTips, we are transforming genetic medicine by helping healthcare providers seamlessly integrate genomic insights into patient care. Backed by top Canadian investors, leading healthcare institutions, and researchers, our platform powers precision medicine for health systems, clinics, and research organizations worldwide. Our product is used by genomic health care providers around the world, and we aim to provide best in class workflow solutions for this specialty. We are looking for a Senior DevOps and Back-end Software Engineer to join our Delivery Team. Most of your focus will be on our cloud infrastructure: keeping client and internal systems secure, reliable and scalable, leading deployments, and driving automation and operational excellence. You will also contribute to our Java back-end, working with front-end developers, project managers and QA to build and maintain the services and integrations that clinicians and genetic counselors depend on. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants real ownership over technical decisions and enjoys solving hard problems across infrastructure, data and system design. Pay range: CA$90,000 – $125,000. We understand that compensation is a large factor in evaluating opportunities. This pay range represents our target for the role, and is determined by market data, the planned responsibilities, and internal equity. Offers are usually near the midpoint, but the final amount may be adjusted based on your experience and skills. One Year From Now, Here’s How You’ll Be Seen: Your Team Sees You As – The engineer who keeps our platform stable and secure, and our releases smooth. You bring strong judgment to infrastructure and back-end decisions, and you raise the bar on automation, monitoring and code quality. Customers See You As – The reason their platform just works. Deployments land cleanly, issues get resolved quickly, and their data stays secure, so their trust in PhenoTips stays intact. The Company Sees You As – A trusted technical contributor who builds for scale, security and compliance from the start, and who helps our engineering practices mature as we grow. How You’ll Make This Happen Keep Our Platform Running
• Deploy, maintain and monitor client and internal systems across cloud environments to ensure security, scalability and reliability.
• Lead system deployments and upgrades, proactively identifying and escalating risks, issues and blockers.
• Investigate and resolve infrastructure issues, collaborating across teams to deliver durable, high quality solutions.
• Manage troubleshooting and debugging for support tickets, including issues escalated from clinical users, working with internal and external teams to diagnose and resolve them. Automate, Secure and Improve
• Drive automation and continuous improvement of our build, test and deployment pipelines, applying strong engineering judgment to design scalable and maintainable solutions.
• Protect patient and personal data as the top priority, following relevant privacy and data protection regulations (PIPEDA, PHIPA, GDPR, HIPAA) through secure cloud infrastructure design, system hardening, authentication and authorization, audit logging and encryption.
• Enhance, establish and champion best practices for change management, compliance,

risk management and operational documentation.
• Research and propose new technologies and methodologies to strengthen our infrastructure and operational efficiency, and contribute technical input to the product roadmap.
• Strengthen operational security by evaluating or building, integrating, and deploying AI-driven tools and technologies to proactively detect and mitigate system vulnerabilities and minimize operational risk. Build and Maintain Back-end Services
• Develop and maintain features, APIs and reusable code in Java and Spring Boot, in collaboration with product managers and front-end developers.
• Build, deploy and maintain integrations with hospital systems, labs and partner platforms using standards such as HL7v2 and FHIR.
• Apply OWASP security principles, participate in code reviews, and write automated tests that run in our CI pipelines.
• Work with Customer and internal stakeholders to analyze data and build data transformation and migration toolsets to support the onboarding of new customers
• Implement internal tools as needed to support the development and operational teams and your own workflows.
• Maintain the lifecycle of containerized services by regularly scanning, patching, and updating images to eliminate vulnerabilities and maintain alignment with internal and external compliance standards Collaborate, Communicate and Document
• Communicate estimates, timelines and status updates clearly to internal and external stakeholders, and participate in daily standups and planning.
• Write technical design and operational documentation, and keep our knowledge base current with data flow and system diagrams, deployment and configuration details.
• Assist in onboarding and training current team members as required. Schedule and Support
• Because we have customers in other time zones that depend on our infrastructure for healthcare delivery, this role includes an early-morning emergency "on-call" window.
• Schedule: You’ll be the alternate/back-up point of contact in the event of critical infrastructure incidents starting at 6am ET / 7am AT.
• These incidents are extremely infrequent, a few times a year or less, but we need someone reliable who can jump in remotely in an emergency.
• We value this availability, and will structure the compensation based on your location and availability. What You Bring
• 5+ years of professional experience in DevOps, infrastructure or back-end engineering in production environments, with most of that in a DevOps or cloud infrastructure role
• Deep experience managing secure cloud infrastructure, ideally on AWS and/or Azure, including system and service hardening, DNS management and authentication configuration (e.g. OAuth2). Experience with GCP is a bonus.
• Strong understanding of CI/CD architecture, code repository management and automated deployment tools (e.g. Git, GitHub, Jenkins, Ansible)

• Hands on experience with containers (Docker, docker compose) and managed databases such as RDS
• Solid understanding of monitoring, change management and deployment processes, with demonstrated risk and project management experience
• 3+ years of hands on experience with Java, including Spring Boot and the Spring Framework
• Practical experience with relational databases (MySql, MariaDB, PostgreSQL), including schema design and query performance analysis and tuning
• Solid understanding of RESTful API design and secure coding practices (OWASP)
• Excellent analytical and debugging skills across infrastructure and application layers
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage professionally with customers, developers and cross functional teams
• Highly organized and independent, comfortable managing multiple priorities and stakeholders Bonus Points
• Experience with healthcare data standards (HL7v2, FHIR) or bioinformatics
• Background in healthcare or genetics
• Experience with LDAP, SAML
• Experience with AWS Lambda or serverless technologies
• Experience with an ORM such as Hibernate
• Experience with search and indexing (Elasticsearch or Apache Solr)
• Familiarity with web servers and server architecture (Apache, Tomcat, NGINX)
• Experience mentoring other developers/engineers or leading small technical initiatives The Details
• Role: Full-time, permanent
•

Location:
Fully remote within Canada
• Eligibility: Must be Canadian resident and authorized to work in Canada (sorry, no sponsorship available at this time)
•
