Scaling Precision Medicine with PhenoTips
At PhenoTips, we are transforming genetic medicine by helping healthcare providers seamlessly integrate genomic insights into patient care. Backed by top Canadian investors, leading healthcare institutions, and researchers, our platform powers precision medicine for health systems, clinics, and research organizations worldwide. Our product is used by genomic health care providers around the world, and we aim to provide best in class workflow solutions for this specialty.
We are looking for a Senior Back-end Developer with strong Java experience who wants to build the systems that power how clinicians and genetic counselors access, store, and act on genomic data. You will work closely with front-end developers, project managers, and QA to design and deliver reliable, secure, and scalable back-end software. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants real ownership over technical decisions and enjoys solving hard problems around data, integration, and system design.
Pay range: CA$90,000 – $125,000. We understand that compensation is a large factor in evaluating opportunities. This pay range represents our target for the role, and is determined by market data, the planned responsibilities, and internal equity. Offers are usually near the midpoint, but the final amount may be adjusted based on your experience and skills.
One Year From Now, Here’s How You’ll Be Seen:
Your Team Sees You As – A dependable, technically sound engineer who builds reliable software, contributes strong architectural judgment, and raises the bar on backend code quality and practices.
Customers See You As – The reason their platform just works. The systems you build keep their data secure, their workflows moving, and their trust in PhenoTips intact.
The Company Sees You As – A trusted technical contributor who can be relied on for sound engineering decisions, who builds for scale and security from the start, and who helps the engineering team grow sustainably.
How You’ll Make This Happen
Develop Functional and Reliable Software
- Design and deliver new features and APIs for our platform, based on the needs of clinicians and genetic counselors and in collaboration with product managers and front-end developers.
- Model complex clinical data (pedigrees, phenotypes, genetic results) in schemas that hold up as the product grows
- Help turn messy real-world data into reliable, structured records
- Build reusable code and libraries for future use.
- Write and maintain automated tests, ensuring they run in CI pipelines, following our software development practices around version control, test, and build infrastructure in collaboration with QA specialists.
Own Security, Quality, and Technical Decisions
- Ensure software is developed with the protection of patient and personal data as the top priority, following relevant privacy and data protection regulations (PHIPA, HIPAA, GDPR) and using authentication, authorization, audit logging and encryption to ensure secure operations.
- Apply OWASP security principles and participate in code reviews.
- Make technical decisions and contribute technical input to the product roadmap.
- Build and maintain integrations with hospital systems, labs and partner platforms, using standards such as HL7v2 and FHIR.
- Implement internal tools as needed to support the software development team and your own workflows.
- Investigate and diagnose bugs, including those escalated from clinical users
Collaborate and Communicate Across the Team
- Participate in daily standups and provide status updates on active development tasks and blockers.
- Participate in planning, including estimating effort and timelines for back-end development tasks.
- Support QA with debugging and fixing issues discovered
- Assist in the onboarding and training of new team members, as required.
Document and Share Knowledge
- Write technical design documentation for new features.
- Keep our technical knowledge base up to date as the product evolves, providing clear data flow and system diagrams, outlining deployment and configuration details to support the DevOps team and future maintenance
What You Bring
