Merrick Global Talent is recruiting a Family Physician with a strong interest or previous experience in Musculoskeletal Medicine to join a specialist multidisciplinary clinic in Edmonton, Alberta.

This is not a conventional longitudinal Family Medicine position.

Instead, you will work within an established neurological and musculoskeletal service, assessing patients at the beginning of their clinical pathway and helping determine the most appropriate next step in their investigation and treatment.

The clinic already uses Family Physicians and other doctors with an interest in MSK and neurological medicine within its MSK intake and screening programmes, designed to direct patients efficiently towards the appropriate service.

The role

You will assess patients presenting with musculoskeletal and related conditions before directing them towards the most appropriate investigation, specialist or treatment pathway.

Your work will include

- Taking focused histories and conducting appropriate musculoskeletal examinations.
- Assessing patients with a broad range of MSK presentations.
- Identifying patients requiring specialist assessment.
- Determining where diagnostic imaging or further investigation is appropriate.
- Referring patients towards Physiatry, Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, Neurology, Sports Medicine or other services where clinically indicated.
- Working closely with diagnostic imaging, physiotherapy and allied health colleagues.
- Helping create an effective route from initial assessment to diagnosis and treatment.
- Recognising presentations requiring escalation or further specialist investigation.

The role would suit a Family Physician who has developed a genuine interest in Musculoskeletal Medicine through General Practice, Sports Medicine, Emergency Medicine, orthopaedics, rehabilitation, pain medicine or another relevant clinical setting.

A formal Sports Medicine qualification is not essential, provided you have appropriate MSK experience and are comfortable assessing this patient group.

Who can apply?

We welcome Family Physicians who are already eligible for independent practice in Alberta.

Internationally trained Family Physicians can also be considered where they meet Alberta's Approved Jurisdiction Route.

CPSA currently recognises four jurisdictions specifically for Family Medicine/General Practice:

- United Kingdom: doctors who have completed GMC-accredited GP specialty training and hold a CCT in General Practice.
- Ireland: graduates of an accredited GP vocational training scheme who hold MICGP.
- Australia: eligible doctors who have completed recognised GP vocational training and hold FRACGP or an eligible rural pathway leading to FACRRM.
- United States: graduates of an ACGME-accredited Family Medicine residency holding DABFM or eligible AOBFP certification.

Eligible physicians through the Approved Jurisdiction Route can potentially proceed directly towards Alberta's General Register, with the MCC examinations, Canadian certification examinations and PRA requirements waived under the current route. CPSA still reviews the physician's complete application and confirms individual eligibility.

Why consider this role?

This gives a Family Physician the opportunity to build their career around Musculoskeletal Medicine without moving into a conventional specialist training programme.

You remain responsible for clinical assessment and decision-making, but instead of managing a traditional Family Medicine patient panel, your work is focused on identifying what a patient needs next and directing them towards the appropriate clinical pathway.

That pathway may include Diagnostic Imaging, Physiatry, Rheumatology, Neurology, Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, Pain Medicine or rehabilitation, many of which are available within the same wider organisation.

For a GP or Family Physician who has increasingly found themselves drawn towards MSK medicine, this could provide a much more focused long-term role.

Merrick Global Talent can also support internationally trained Family Physicians with understanding CPSA registration and the practical process of relocating to Alberta.
