Job Summary

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are valuable members of the interdisciplinary health care team. LPNs provide direct nursing care to reliable and unstable clients/patients/residents under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The LPN I in the Correctional Health Services Program works within their individual scope of practice is responsible for health assessment, medication administration, suicide assessments, nursing care planning, disease management, wound care, end of life care, and may provide mentoring and direction to students and other staff.

Regularly requires physical exertion and handling, moving, pushing or pulling objects between 10 – 15 lbs and occasionally required to support,



lift or move patients/objects up to 30 lbs.

Regularly required to work in awkward, cramped positions (bending/kneeling/stretching) and constantly standing and moving about.

Regularly pushes and pulls objects using light to medium forces and stands and walks.

Regularly requires visual concentration to give medications, read orders/referrals, patients’ charts/document, observe and treat patients combined with time pressures and deadlines.

Regularly required to climb stairs and move quickly in a variety of environments (depending upon location).

Regularly exposed to volatile clients whose behavior is sometimes unpredictable.

Job Qualifications

Successful completion of an approved Licensed Practical Nursing program.

Current and continuing practicing licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Nurses.

Current BLS certification is required.

Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships.

Demonstrated initiative and the ability to work independently.

A satisfactory record of work performance is required.
