Calgary

Merrick Global Talent is working with an established independent Neurology and Physiatry practice in Calgary that is looking to add another Physiatrist to its team.

For a physician considering community practice in Alberta, one of the biggest questions is whether the patient demand and clinical support will actually be there once you arrive. In this case, both are already well established.

The clinic currently has approximately 10 Neurologists and neurological specialists alongside three Physiatrists, with the Physiatry service carrying an approximate 18-month wait for appointments.

This is a predominantly outpatient opportunity within a well-developed group practice, with the infrastructure in place to allow physicians to focus on clinical work rather than spend large parts of the day dealing with administration.

The practice The clinic has operated independently since 2018 and has been built around a community-based specialist model rather than a hospital environment.

Physicians work as independent contractors and retain autonomy over how they structure their practice and appointment book.

The main clinical space is approximately 8,000 sq ft, with dedicated Physiatry consulting and treatment rooms. The Physiatry area includes four examination rooms equipped with ultrasound and the equipment required for outpatient practice.

There is also a separate EMG and nerve conduction laboratory with dedicated technical support.

Established patient demand

This is not a position where an incoming physician would be expected to arrive and generate their own referral base from scratch.

The existing Physiatry service has an approximately 18-month waiting list, providing a robust pipeline of patients for an additional physician.

There is also a longer-term opportunity within the practice. One of the group's senior Physiatrists is expected to retire within approximately two years and currently runs a significant spasticity practice. For the right incoming physician,

there may be an opportunity to take on elements of that practice over time.

Clinical scope The role can be structured around the individual physician's clinical interests.

This could include

- Outpatient Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation consultations
- Procedure-based Physiatry
- Spasticity management
- Musculoskeletal and rehabilitation medicine
- EMG and nerve conduction work, where this forms part of the physician's scope

EMG is not essential, but the clinic is one of the practices able to provide dedicated laboratory space and technical support for physicians wishing to incorporate it into their work.

Support

One of the strongest aspects of the opportunity is the level of infrastructure around the physicians.

The clinic provides

- Full administrative support
- Referral intake, triage and appointment booking
- Physician billing support
- Workflow assistants
- Nursing support, including patient callbacks
- Support with medication processes
- Pharmacy partnership supporting medication coverage and insurance paperwork
- Dedicated EMG technical support where required

There is no mandatory on-call commitment and no requirement to provide after-hours clinics. Physicians can choose to work later sessions if they wish.

Collegial specialist environment

This is a sizeable specialist group rather than a small standalone practice.

There is regular interaction between Neurologists, Physiatrists and other neurological specialists, with opportunities for clinical discussion and collaboration.

The practice also has a relationship with the university and hosts residents and fellows.

Physicians interested in teaching may therefore have opportunities to become involved, although this is not a requirement of the position.

Remuneration The position operates on a fee-for-service, independent contractor model.

The standard clinic arrangement discussed is:

75% physician / 25% clinic

Where a physician uses dedicated EMG technical support, the overall overhead is typically closer to 30% because of the additional technician cost.

Actual billings will depend heavily on clinical scope, patient volume and the balance between consultations and procedures.

By way of indication, the clinic advised that current activity can generate approximately:

- $3,000 to $4,500 CAD on a lighter consultation day
- $5,000 to $8,000 CAD on a procedure-focused day
- $7,000 to $9,000 CAD on an EMG-focused day

These figures are examples of current clinic activity rather than guaranteed earnings.

Who would suit the opportunity?

This would particularly suit a Physiatrist who wants to develop a predominantly outpatient career within an established specialist group.

Physicians with interests in procedures, spasticity or EMG may find the setup particularly attractive, although the clinic is open to discussing the clinical scope with suitable candidates individually.

The practice would ideally look for an initial commitment of approximately two to three years, reflecting the investment involved in onboarding and developing an incoming physician's practice.

Considering Alberta?

Merrick Global Talent can discuss the opportunity confidentially, including the clinical setup, practice model and the practical steps involved in exploring a move to Calgary.

If you are already considering Alberta, or would simply like to understand whether this type of community Physiatry practice could suit you, we would be happy to have an initial conversation.
