Residential Support Worker – Relief/Casual

Position Summary

Residential Support Workers provide feminist-based, compassionate, and innovative support, counselling, and therapeutic or activity-based group programming for women and their children who are living in the shelter.

Residential Support Workers assist women in developing goals, action plans, and strategies while residing in the shelter. They promote a caring, healthy, safe, and positive residential workplace. Responsibilities include case management, personal safety assessment and planning, and referrals to counselling and legal supports using a harm reduction approach.

Staff facilitate support groups and structured activities that promote healing, personal growth, and empowerment. Residential Support Workers also prevent, manage, and de-escalate behavioural concerns that arise within the shelter environment.

Job Requirements

- Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset but is not required.
- Diploma or degree in Social Work, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Driving record check.
- Valid driver’s licence and access to reliable transportation.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) certification.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and under pressure.
- Ability to perform housekeeping duties.
- Administrative and office experience, research skills, and food preparation experience.

The Successful Candidate Must Be Able To

- Prepare and maintain client files and communicate effectively with colleagues.
- Effectively manage crises and conflict.
- Act with integrity at all times.
- Maintain program statistics for evaluation purposes.
- Assess client needs and eligibility for services.
- Liaise with social service agencies and healthcare providers.
- Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 30 lbs., as required, when handling supplies, groceries, donations, household items, and program materials.
- Sit for extended periods while completing documentation, answering crisis-line calls, attending meetings, or providing one-to-one support.
- Stand and walk for extended periods and move throughout the shelter, including using stairs where required.
- Bend, reach, kneel, crouch, and perform repetitive hand and arm movements while completing housekeeping, food preparation, administrative, and client-support tasks.
- Use a computer, telephone, and other office equipment for prolonged periods, including sustained keyboarding and screen use.
- Maintain concentration, sound judgment, and emotional regulation while responding to crises, conflict, disclosures of trauma, competing priorities, and frequent interruptions.
- Work independently and as part of a team during day, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts.
- Respond promptly to emergencies and participate in evacuations, safety procedures, and crisis intervention as required.
- Work in a communal residential environment that may include exposure to noise, cleaning products, food allergens, infectious illnesses, and emotionally distressing subject matter.
- Speak clearly and communicate effectively so that residents, callers, coworkers, and community partners can understand information and instructions.
- Hear and understand verbal communication, including crisis-line calls, conversations in shared spaces, and emergency instructions.




- See and interpret details at close range, including written records, computer screens, medication or product labels, and safety-related information.

Les intervenantes résidencielle offrent aux femmes et à leurs enfants hébergés au refuge des services de soutien, de counselling ainsi que des programmes thérapeutiques ou des activités de groupe fondés sur une approche féministe, compatissante et novatrice.

Les intervenantes résidencielle accompagnent les femmes dans l’élaboration de leurs objectifs, de leurs plans d’action et de leurs stratégies pendant leur séjour au refuge. Elles contribuent à maintenir un environnement résidenciel bienveillant, sain, sécuritaire et positif. Leurs responsabilités comprennent la gestion de cas, l’évaluation et la planification de la sécurité personnelle ainsi que l’orientation vers des services de counselling et de soutien juridique selon une approche de réduction des méfaits.

Les membres du personnel animent des groupes de soutien et des activités structurées favorisant la guérison, le développement personnel et l’autonomisation. Les intervenantes résidencielle préviennent, gèrent et résorbent également les préoccupations comportementales pouvant survenir dans le milieu du refuge.
