Who we are
Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation, protecting the system from threats, advancing the province’s energy conservation programs, and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources we’ll need in the decades to come.
This is a unionized position that falls within the Nuclear Development Department of the Legal Resources and Corporate Governance Business Unit.

As Senior Advisor, Nuclear Development, you will play a key role in advancing Ontario's nuclear strategy and supporting the development of new nuclear generation. You will work on some of the province's most significant energy investments, with direct exposure to commercial negotiations, strategic policy development, project finance, and executive-level decision-making.
The role is currently focused on supporting the planning and advancement of Bruce C, a potential large-scale nuclear generation project that could become one of the largest infrastructure developments in Canada. Working closely with government, utilities, industry partners, technical experts, and senior leadership, you will help develop commercial frameworks, evaluate financing and procurement strategies, manage project risks, and support critical decisions that will shape Ontario's electricity system for decades to come.

What you’ll do
In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through the following activities:
Lead the execution of nuclear development initiatives, including the planning and advancement of the commercial frameworks to support major projects such as Bruce C.
Support the development and negotiation of complex commercial agreements with industry partners, project developers, advisors, and other key stakeholders.
Conduct techno-economic assessments, financial analysis, and risk evaluations to inform nuclear development strategies and support investment, procurement, and policy decisions.
Provide strategic advice and recommendations to senior leadership, government representatives, and internal stakeholders on nuclear policy, commercial strategy, and project development matters.
Coordinate multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment across technical,
commercial, regulatory, legal, and policy workstreams.
Engage with external consultants, advisors, and subject matter experts supporting due diligence, commercial negotiations, and project development activities.
Build and maintain effective relationships with government ministries, regulatory agencies, nuclear industry participants, and Indigenous communities, where applicable.
Review and assess commercial, technical, financial, contractual, and regulatory documentation related to nuclear development initiatives.
Support and participate in commercial negotiations and strategic discussions with project partners and stakeholders.
Prepare briefing notes, reports, presentations, and recommendations to support executive and Board-level decision-making.
Represent the IESO in stakeholder engagements, industry forums, working groups, and negotiations.
Travel occasionally to the Bruce Power site and other stakeholder locations as required.
In a typical day, you willbeinvolved with leading and coordinating nuclear development initiatives, working closely with technical, commercial, legal, regulatory, and policy teams to advance major projects. The individual spends significant time analyzing financial, commercial, and risk-related information, reviewing project documentation, and developing strategies to support investment and procurement decisions. They regularly engage with industry partners, government representatives, consultants, and other stakeholders to negotiate agreements, align priorities, and resolve complex project issues. The role also requires preparing executive briefings, presentations, and recommendations for senior leadership and Board-level discussions. Throughout the day, they serve as a key advisor on nuclear policy and commercial strategy while representing the organization in stakeholder meetings, industry forums, and strategic negotiations.
Role Requirements
Our team consists of experts from diverse backgrounds, each bringing their unique perspectives and skills.
To succeed in this role, you’ll need:
typically, 8 to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in electricity generation, energy infrastructure, or related sectors, with responsibilities spanning both technical and commercial functions. Experience should demonstrate the ability to synthesize complex information, engage diverse stakeholders, and develop recommendations that support strategic decision-making.
Critical knowledge gained through experience includes:
Undergraduate degree in engineering, business, finance, economics, or a related discipline,
Solid understanding of electricity generation technologies and commercial project development.
Experience in the electricity sector, with exposure to nuclear generation, nuclear project development, or other large-scale energy infrastructure.
Demonstrated knowledge of project finance, including the ability to develop, review, and assess complex financial models and perform discounted cash flow and other investment analyses.
Advanced Excel skills, including significant experience developing and maintaining financial and analytical models. Experience with other analytical tools and programming languages is considered an asset.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and convey complex information effectively.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving,
and critical thinking abilities.
Proven ability to work independently, lead initiatives, and contribute effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Sound judgment, initiative, and the ability to navigate ambiguity in a dynamic and evolving environment.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities while delivering high-quality work within established timelines.
Sound knowledge of Ontario and North American electricity sector and the related regulatory environment.
Sound knowledge of Ontario and North American electricity markets, industry structures, and regulatory frameworks.
Assets
Direct experience supporting nuclear refurbishment or new-build projects.
Knowledge of Ontario energy sector regulation, including the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) rate-regulation framework.
Experience developing, negotiating, interpreting, or administering complex electricity sector agreements and commercial contracts.
A postgraduate degree in engineering, business, finance, economics or a related field.
A professional designation, including one or more of P.Eng., PMP, CPA, CA, or CFA.
