Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Chief Geologist is responsible for overseeing all activities related to underground operations, including mapping, sampling, grade control, test hole drilling, modelling and examining geological data or processes and complying with operating guidelines. The Chief Geologist will develop a team of geoscientists, generate budgets for specific activities (such as underground drilling), institute procedures, practices, and techniques in the geology department. The Chief Geologist will foster a health and safety culture of Zero Harm while ensuring compliance with provincial and federal regulations.
Salary: $180,000 annually
Key Job Functions
Responds and provides advice to questions regarding grade control and geological modelling.
Supervises geological analysis and modelling.
Controls costs with respect to mine geology and maximizes efficiencies by implementing approved recommendations.
Recommends alternative procedures, methods, and policies to improve performance, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and organizational requirements.
Contributes to the development of standard operating procedures and policies with respect to geological modelling and grade control.
Stays current with mine geology trends and introduces any new information into work assignments.
Continually develops product or technical knowledge and skill set of team and self.
Continually develops, monitors, and coaches a team of technical professionals.
Analyzes data and issues with respect to geological modelling and grade control.
Overseas the preparation of technical reports and documentation to ensure compliance with industry and operational requirements.
Ensures the reconciliation of mine with mill data and mine with reserve and resource data.
Manages databases and reviews data for production and reconciliation purposes.
Assists in the training and skill development with regard to technical issues in mine geology.
Relays information regarding ground control and other geotechnical issues.
Relays information on operating guidelines, compliance regulations and policies.
Takes a leading role in the employment and development of geological staff.
Ensures ongoing effective management of staff by setting transparent performance goals, providing regular feedback and development through training.
Ensures direct reports are developed, trained and coached to obtain optimum efficiencies.
Ensures there is the necessary staffing and equipment available to meet production targets and at the same time maintain costs within the established budget guidelines.
Resolves any employee relations issues that may arise.
Upholds and follows safety policies, procedures, regulations hazard identification, and promotes safety awareness through day-to-day attitudes and actions.
Utilizes the safeguards, safety appliances and personal protective equipment or devices.
Keeps updated with industry best practices and new technologies to improve overall safety and efficiency of the operation and ensures compliance with the Mines Act, policies, laws, provincial and federal legislation, and regulations.
Adjusts and establishes daily tasks to meet changing orders of priorities and performs other related duties as required.
Education/Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering.
Minimum of 10+ years of progressive work experience as a Geologist, with at least four years of supervisory experience in an underground and/or open-pit mining environment.
Registered or eligible to register as a Professional Geoscientist or GIT with PGO.

Ability to work in conditions exposed to the elements (snow, rain, sub-freezing weather, heat, and wind).
Knowledge and understanding of environmental and safety provincial and federal legislation; and safety and environmental standards and legislation pertaining to the mining industry.
Preferred Qualifications
Mining experience or soft rock experience with various geological techniques like mining, boring, and numerical modelling.
Computer proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite, 3-D modelling software, geological database software and mapping software.
Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license or equivalent.
Working Conditions
Perform physical tasks including standing, bending, and moving for long periods of time, lifting, and moving up to 30 lbs. throughout a shift in a fast-paced environment.
It is a fly-in-fly-out camp-based position, and the mine site is in a mountainous region that can be subjected to snowstorms, avalanches, and high precipitation volume.
