About the role The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is centered around the idea that respect and understanding of human rights can serve as a positive force for change in the world. The Protection Officer will support our collective efforts to build a workplace culture that is inclusive,equitable, innovative, and focused on inspiring action.
Reporting to the Manager, Facility Operations, and under the daily supervision and direction of the Assistant Manager, Protection Services, the Protection Officer ensures safety and security of all building occupants, provides for the physical security of the building and surrounding grounds, and ensures the facilities and assets are protected and secure, all on a 24-hour/7-day basis. This position contributes to the success of security operations by ensuring the ever-changing security needs of the CMHR. They will ensure that necessary protections are in place and that core business is properly and appropriately secured against internal or external threats to the workforce, visitors, volunteers or other stakeholders.

What you will do Contribute to a culture that promotes respect, equity, inclusion and innovation, and models anti-racist and accountable behaviours.
Monitor and controls access points and restricted areas in and outside of the Museum.
Monitor, assess, and initiate responses to various alarms and systems (fire, security heating, ventilation and air conditioning [HVAC], plumbing or electrical issues).
Supervise the daily contracted guard deployment during normal operation and security logistics during special events.
Ensure continuity of the security operations coverage schedule.
Investigate any incidents (i.e., vandalism, etc.) and generate the required reports.
Ensure compliance with the Protection Services Operations Guide and standard operating procedures and assist with implementation of new security protocols or procedures as assigned.
Provide training, coaching and guidance to contracted guard staff to ensure compliance with their operational guard post duties and contractual requirements.
Work with the Shipper-Receiver to ensure compliance with security access and Shipping-Receiving protocols, and provide support as required.
Implement daily instructions and briefings to ensure that standard operating procedures are followed by security and CMHR staff.
Ensure that regular patrols are conducted inside and outside the building.
Assist with implementation of new security protocols or procedures as assigned.
Create and deliver security-related training, orientation, and exercises as required.
Assume responsibility outside of regular business hours to provide support to Protection Services leadership while assuming the role of Chief Emergency Fire Warden and Emergency Response Coordinator.
Cover critical functions and emergencies outside of business hours (i.e., evenings, weekends, holidays).
Provide direction to staff members, contracted guards, members of the public and first responders.
What we're looking for Minimumof5years ofexperience in a similar roleor an equivalent combination ofsupervision,education,trainingand/orsecurity-relatedexperience.
Commitment to human rights principles, including respect, equity,inclusionand dignity for all.
A sound working knowledge of securitybest practicesand legislation(Federal,Provincial and Municipal) that impactsecurity.
Strong understanding and working knowledge ofautomated security systems, including digital video monitoring systems,access control systems,fire alarm detection systemsandsecurity incident reporting systems.
Demonstrated experience effectively handling high stress or criticalincidents.
Proficiencyin Microsoft Officesuite software.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Sound independent judgement and the ability to make decisionsand remain calmunder stressful situations.
Effective listening,probingand writingskillsto produce quality investigations and reports.
Strong time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure, multi-taskand prioritize.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Well-developed leadership skillsand the ability to coach and motivate people.
Desired Qualifications:
Post-secondary education in Security Management.
Experience working in or supervising a Security Operations Centre.
ASIS International Physical Security Professional (PSP) and/or Certified Protection Professional (CPP) designation.
First Aid/CPR Level C/AED or willingness to complete while on the job.
Familiarity withthe Federal Policy on Government Security.
Experience working for,or providing security services to,a museumor similar cultural institution
Ability to communicate orally in both official languages (English and French).
Experience with troubleshootingand/orproblem-solving technical security system issues.
Successfulcompletion ofa course on physical restraintsorpical intervention techniques.
Official Language Proficiency: English Essential, French Preferred: This position may have to handle requests and understand simple requests in French from members of the public.
This rolehas a preference for candidates who can communicate in French; however, it is not a requirement and we encourage all interested candidates to apply.
Other: May requirelongperiodsat a desk, reading lengthy documents, and time in front of a computer.
May requireperiods of standing and walking throughout the building and grounds for securityinspectionsor when providing immediate security incident response.
Providesfirst aid responseas required.Capableofcarrying a10-kg first responderbag,andtophysicallyassistothers duringemergency situations or evacuations.
Ability to perform all physical aspects of duties, including but not limited to bending, lifting, squatting,climbing stairsand at times running.
Robust focus andattention to detail isrequiredtoactively and accuratelysurveyseveralcomputermonitorsand severalclosed-circuittelevisionmonitors.
Potential high stressor physically demandingsituations arelikely whencarrying outcertainduties,e.g.dealingwith facility emergencies,emergentsecurity relatedissuesandchallenging human interactions,which may require intervention to preventphysical harm to others.
Flexibilityto workevenings,nightsand weekends (4, 8 or 12-hour shifts)on short notice based on operational requirements to support continuoussecurityoperations(on a rotational schedule).
