Position Overview
Title: Facilities / Datacenter Caretaker
Department: Engineering & Operations
Reports To: Manager, Facilities & Datacenter
Location: 95 Apple Creek Blvd, Markham, Ontario (on-site)
Employment Type: Full-time, permanent
Schedule: Shift-based; includes evenings, weekends, and on-call rotation
Role Summary
Pathway Communications is a managed IT and cybersecurity services provider based in Markham, Ontario. We have been in business since 1995. Pathway operates a wholly-owned Tier III data centre in Markham and employs approximately 200 staff across Canada and overseas.
The Facilities / Datacenter Caretaker maintains Pathway Communications' office and datacenter environment in a safe, clean, and operationally ready state.
The role covers day-to-day building upkeep, datacenter housekeeping, environmental monitoring, physical security checks, and vendor coordination.
This is a hands-on position suited to someone who takes ownership of their space and can work independently across a mixed office and critical-infrastructure environment.
Key Responsibilities
Facilities Maintenance Perform daily walkthroughs of office and datacenter areas; identify and resolve maintenance issues (lighting, plumbing, HVAC, doors, locks, signage); Coordinate with building management and external contractors for repairs, renovations, and preventive maintenance; Manage cleaning schedules and standards for common areas, washrooms, kitchens, server rooms, and loading dock; Receive, move, and stage deliveries including IT equipment, furniture, and supplies; Maintain inventory of janitorial, office, and building supplies; reorder as needed; Support office moves, desk setups, and workspace reconfigurations
Datacenter Operations Monitor datacenter environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, water detection)
and escape anomalies; Perform structured cabling runs, cable management, and labelling under direction of the engineering team; Rack, unrack, and physically install or decommission servers, switches, UPS units, and PDUs; Maintain cleanliness standards in server rooms: raised-floor cleaning, air-filter replacement, dust control; Assist with fuel checks and generator run-tests; coordinate fuel deliveries; Log and escort vendor and contractor visits to secured datacenter areas
Physical Security & Safety Conduct daily physical security checks: doors, access-control panels, cameras, fencing, parking areas; Report and follow up on security incidents, access anomalies, or safety hazards; Maintain fire extinguisher, first-aid, and emergency-lighting inspection logs; Support health-and-safety compliance, including participation in joint health and safety committee activities where required
Vendor & Contractor Coordination Act as the on-site point of contact for facilities vendors (cleaning, HVAC, electrical, pest control, waste removal); Track work orders and ensure completion to standard; Obtain quotes for small repairs and maintenance projects; escape larger items to the Manager, Facilities & Datacenter
Qualifications
2+ years of experience in building maintenance, facilities support, or a similar hands-on role
Familiarity with datacenter or server-room environments (raised floors, cooling systems, rack infrastructure)
Basic understanding of structured cabling (Cat5e/Cat6, fibre, patch panels)
Comfortable lifting up to 50 lbs and performing physical tasks (ladder work, floor cleaning, equipment handling)
Reliable, self-directed, and comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
Strong attention to detail and a habit of following through on open items
Valid Ontario driver's licence (G or G2)
Preferred Trade certification or college diploma in building maintenance, electrical, HVAC, or a related field
Experience with access-control systems (card readers, intercoms, CCTV)
Familiarity with WHMIS and Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act requirements
Experience working in a managed services provider, ISP, or co-location environment
Basic proficiency with ticketing systems for logging and tracking work orders
Working Conditions
This is a fully in office position at our Markham datacenter and office facility. Shift work is required, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays on a rotating basis. Participation in an on-call rotation for after-hours facility and datacenter emergencies.
The role involves regular physical activity: standing, walking, climbing ladders, lifting equipment, and working in warm server-room environments. Occasional exposure to outdoor conditions (parking lot, loading dock, generator area).
