Job Description:

Our client, a well-established and respected construction company, is seeking an experienced Accounting Manager / Controller to oversee the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the organization.

This is a hands-on leadership position suited to an accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership of the full accounting cycle while overseeing a small accounting/administrative team. The role will have responsibility for cash flow, financial reporting, payroll, AP/AR, government remittances, reconciliations, and accounting related to the company's property and tenant portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Accounting

- Prepare monthly and interim financial statements and management reporting.
- Lead the month-end close process, including monthly journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Perform and review bank and general ledger account reconciliations.
- Prepare regular bank status and cash position reports.
- Manage cash flow and monitor short-term funding requirements.
- Prepare and coordinate federal and provincial corporate tax installments.
- Ensure accurate and timely HST/GST reporting and remittances.

Accounts Receivable & Accounts Payable
- Manage accounts receivable, collections, and cash application.
- Oversee the accounts payable function and ensure invoices and payments are processed accurately and on time.
- Coordinate rush and priority cheque requirements.
- Monitor outstanding receivables and payables and proactively address issues.

Payroll & Benefits
- Manage management/office payroll and oversee payroll administration for field employees.
- Ensure payroll information is accurate and processed within established deadlines.




- Coordinate employee benefit remittances.
- Manage WSIB claims, reporting, and clearance certificates.

Property & Tenant Accounting
- Prepare monthly tenant billings.
- Track lease payments and TMI (taxes, maintenance, and insurance) recoveries.
- Monitor tenant accounts, outstanding balances, and related reconciliations.
- Maintain accurate accounting records relating to the company's properties and tenants.

Team & Office Oversight
- Supervise the day-to-day activities of the accounting function.
- Review work completed by accounting staff and ensure appropriate internal controls are maintained.
- Establish priorities and ensure monthly accounting deadlines are consistently met.
- Work closely with ownership/senior management and provide timely financial information to support business decisions.

Requirements:

Qualifications

- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within construction, property management, real estate, development, or a related industry.
- Robust hands-on experience with the full accounting cycle.
- Demonstrated experience with cash flow management, month-end reporting, AP, AR, payroll, bank reconciliations, and government remittances.
- Previous experience supervising or overseeing accounting staff.
- Knowledge of HST/GST, WSIB, payroll and corporate tax installment requirements.
- Strong Excel skills and experience working with accounting/ERP systems.
- CPA designation or accounting degree/diploma is an asset, but equivalent hands-on experience will be considered.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- A practical, hands-on approach with strong communication and problem-solving skills.
