What We Do

There has never been a more exciting time to be at WAHA. We are an integrated health system providing the full continuum of care to the six communities of the western James Bay coast with over 500 employees, physicians, and partners in care. As a health authority, you will work in a unique setting where you have the opportunity to care for patients in all phases of their life journey, in all areas of their health experience.

From Primary, Acute, and Mental Health, Dental, Specialty Clinics, Population Health and the WAHA Paramedic Service, the opportunities for growth are boundless. We provide community-based programming in all six of our communities, have six paramedic bases, three hospitals, four emergency departments, one community health centre and a total of 72 beds. Who You Are

- Strong clinical assessment and counselling skills
- Ability to work effectively in cross-cultural and community-based contexts
- Excellent communication, advocacy, and relationship-building skills
- Ability to work independently in remote and resource-limited settings
- Strong documentation and organizational skills
- Comfort with virtual care and telehealth platforms

What You’ll Do

- Conduct culturally respectful psychosocial assessments with pregnant and postpartum clients and families
- Provide short-term counselling, emotional support, and crisis intervention
- Deliver care that respects Indigenous worldviews, languages, traditions, and community protocols
- Collaborate with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, traditional healers, and community helpers as appropriate
- Support families navigating medical travel, birth evacuation, and separation from community
- Build and maintain trusting relationships within communities
- Coordinate care across community health centres, WAHA hospitals,



and southern referral sites
- Participate in outreach clinics, home visits, and community-based programming
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation
- Participate in interdisciplinary case conferences and care planning
- Regular travel to fly-in and remote communities

What You Bring

- Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) required
- Master of Social Work (MSW) preferred
- Registration in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical social work experience preferred
- Valid CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel by air ground and water within the WAHA region
- Must be fluent in the local Cree native language
- Preference will be given to those candidates who are Cree from the Mushkeogwuk Territory
- Ability to communicate in the local native Cree language is an asset
