Overview The Field Survey Assistant is an entry-level development position that supports field data collection and survey activities for Saulteau First Nations infrastructure and capital projects. Working under supervision, the employee will learn to use survey equipment, maintain accurate field records, follow safe-work practices, and assist with transferring field information into approved mapping and data systems. The position provides structured technical training, mentorship, and practical experience related to the duties of the role.

Duties & Responsibilities

Field Survey Support

- Assist with field surveys for infrastructure, capital projects, utilities, land development, and other Saulteau First Nations projects
- Support topographic, watercourse, drainage, TLE/TLA parcel mapping, construction layout, quantity verification, and as-built data collection as assigned.
- Set up, operate, care for, and transport GNSS (RTK) survey equipment, total stations, data collectors, and related tools under supervision.
- Assist with collecting measurements, coordinates, elevations, field notes, photographs, and other site information.
- Mark survey points and support site layout activities as directed.
- Assist with establishing control points and survey benchmarks and support drone-based imagery collection for mapping and inspection.
- Help complete equipment checks and report damaged, missing, or unsafe equipment.

Data and Documentation

- Enter, organize, and maintain field survey data, notes, photographs, and project records.
- Assist with transferring field data into approved systems such as Trimble Access, Trimble Business Center, QGIS,



and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Support the preparation of surface models, terrain maps, land parcel maps, and infrastructure planning exhibits.
- Follow established file-naming, data-quality, confidentiality, and recordkeeping practices.
- Identify incomplete or inconsistent field information and bring concerns to the supervisor.

Teamwork and Safety

- Work collaboratively with Infrastructure, GIS, Public Works, consultants, contractors, and other SFN departments as assigned.
- Follow SFN policies, safe-work procedures, equipment instructions, and applicable site requirements.
- Participate in required technical training, mentoring, and performance reviews as part of an approved training plan.
- Use respectful and culturally appropriate practices when working in the community and on the land.
- Perform other related duties as required.

Training and Development

- Complete equipment, software, safety, and drone training identified in an approved training plan.
- Participate in the planned six-month apprentice-style field mentorship program led by SFN technical staff.
- Demonstrate safe equipment use, reliable attendance, accurate field documentation, and the required technical competencies.
- Training and development opportunities will be based on operational needs, available funding, employee performance, and approved training plans.

Ideal Qualifications & Experience

- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence.
- Valid First Aid certification is considered an asset. Candidates without First Aid must be willing to complete training provided by SFN.
- Ability to provide a satisfactory criminal record check with the vulnerable sector.
- Previous field, construction, labour, mapping, GPS, surveying, or technical experience is considered an asset.
- Interest in surveying, GIS, geomatics,



infrastructure, construction, land-based work, or a related field.
- Willingness and ability to complete internal and external training provided or arranged by SFN.

Ideal Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Basic computer skills, including the ability to enter, organize, and maintain information using Microsoft Excel.
- Ability and willingness to learn survey equipment, GIS, mapping and survey software, and other technical data systems.
- Careful attention to detail and the ability to record information accurately.
- Ability to follow instructions, ask questions, and apply feedback.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to manage assigned tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
- Ability to operate, maintain, and care for SFN equipment responsibly.
- Solid safety awareness and willingness to follow safe-work procedures.
- Ability to adapt to changing field conditions, priorities, and work assignments.
- Knowledge of Saulteau First Nations culture, community, Treaty Rights, and land stewardship is considered an asset.

Work Conditions

- Position includes regular outdoor and field work in changing weather, terrain, and site conditions.
- Travel within SFN lands, the community, and surrounding areas is required
- The employee may be required to walk over uneven ground, stand for extended periods, bend, climb, and carry survey equipment
- Office and computer work is required to enter and organize field information.
- Regular hours of work are Monday to Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Overtime may be required based on operational needs and must be approved in advance.

Pay: $22.35-$24.48 per hour Expected hours: 32.0 per week
