In Alberta, the positions of the Alberta Ombudsman and Public Interest Commissioner are held by the same person with the main office located in Edmonton.

The Ombudsman provides oversight of the provincial government to ensure fair treatment through independent investigations, recommendations and education within Alberta government authorities, professional organizations, municipalities, and the Patient Concerns Resolution Process of Alberta Health Services.

The Public Interest Commissioner oversees the disclosure and investigation of serious and significant wrongdoings in or relating to departments, public entities, offices of the Legislature and political offices, that are unlawful, dangerous to the public or injurious to the public interest.

The offices of the Ombudsman and Public Interest Commissioner (the Offices) are independent legislative offices and operate under the authority of the Alberta Legislature.

Role

Corporate Services is a tight-knit team that includes a Corporate Analyst and a Senior Corporate Analyst, under the guidance of the Director, Corporate Services & SFO. The Corporate Analyst role is multifaceted, with key responsibilities in finance, including reporting, budgeting, and forecasting, as well as IT management, human resource consultation, ATIA request coordination, capital asset and contract management, and accommodations and facility management.

Reporting to the Senior Corporate Analyst, the Corporate Analyst supports the delivery of Corporate Services functions.



This includes providing executive and line-area management with budget and forecast information, financial analysis, and management reports to help ensure the Offices’ evolving needs are met. The role is also responsible for maintaining accurate financial information by completing reconciliations and investigations, addressing variances, and supporting effective business processes. Success in this role requires strong research skills, the ability to interpret and apply legislation, policies, and procedures, and a solid understanding of internal controls.

Corporate Services provides support to the staff of the Offices and works closely with counterparts in other Legislative offices. Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with ability to develop valuable rapport and maintain contacts is key.

Working knowledge of the Government of Alberta’s Enterprise Resource Planning System (1GX), financial administration, budget preparation, and human resource management is considered an asset.

Qualifications

University graduation in a related field is required,



plus two years related experience; or a related two-year diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution and four years related experience.

In-depth knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards and Alberta’s applicable legislation (e.g.,Financial Administration Act, Fiscal Planning and Transparency Act, and Government Organizational Act) is preferred.

To be successful, the candidate will require the ability to be a self starter, think critically, and work both independently and collaboratively as part of the Corporate team. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential for this role, as well as strong attention to detail and expertise in handling confidential and sensitive information.
