Join our dynamic team as a Relief Captain, where your expertise and leadership will play a key role in the safe and efficient operation of our vessels. In this position, you will serve as a relief captain, stepping in as required to ensure seamless navigation, uphold safety standards, and maintain operational excellence across Kootenay Lake.
Located in Balfour, British Columbia, Western Pacific Marine has proudly provided ferry services for the Province of British Columbia since 2004. We operate the free ferry service on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake, surrounded by the beautiful Selkirk Mountains and conveniently located between Vancouver, British Columbia, and Calgary, Alberta.

Our marine personnel are trained and certified in accordance with Transport Canada requirements, with a solid focus on customer service, safety, and quality assurance. As a Relief Captain, you will:
- Interact professionally with crew members and customers, using strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrate excellent vessel-handling and navigation abilities.
- Exercise sound judgment and apply strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Safely navigate vessels along designated routes while adhering to applicable maritime regulations and company policies.
- Lead safety drills and emergency response procedures, fostering a strong culture of safety and preparedness among crew members.
- Support the operational needs of the company by providing relief coverage as required.
What You’ll Bring to the Team
- Previous experience working as a Captain in the marine industry.
- Strong knowledge of applicable Marine Acts, Regulations,
and Safety Management Systems.
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Results-oriented approach with a strong commitment to safety and operational excellence.
- Transport Canada Master Certificate of Competency or higher (required).
- Ability to work effectively in a unionized environment.
- A desire to live and work in the Balfour/Nelson area.
