Job Title:Research Assistant/Technician 2 – Animal Care FacilityDepartment:Facilities Support | BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute | Faculty of MedicineCompensation Range:$4,333.86 - $5,155.61 CAD MonthlyPosting End Date:June 14, 2026 (Applications accepted until 11:59 PM on posting end date)Job End Date:July 1, 2027OverviewThis position directly supports the animal-based research community within the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute by providing high level animal care in close collaboration with Clinical Veterinarians, facility staff, and laboratories. The Animal Care Technician provides facility support within the BCCHR Animal Care Facility, maintaining daily animal care, facility cleanliness, and supplies.ResponsibilitiesProvide consistent, high-quality and compassionate care to all animals in accordance with CCAC guidelines and established research protocols.Perform basic husbandry, handling, restraint, and health, behaviour and welfare surveillance of small laboratory animal species.Maintain breeding colonies, including feeding, weaning, and record-keeping; conduct physical healthrounds and prepare health reports.Isolate infected or ill animals, report to veterinarian, and participate in minor technical procedures such as ear notching, sample collection, injections, euthanasia, necropsy, and tissue/organ collection as directed.Receive and pack live animal shipments; handle packaging,labeling, and processing of biological, biochemical, and hazardous materials.Execute cage wash and maintenance tasks, ensuring cleanliness and organization of cages, equipment,



and storage facilities.Assist ACF research staff and users with animal care procedures and techniques, and recommend revisions to existing policies and procedures.Perform duties in the cage wash area and maintain storeroom supplies.Demonstrate and explain T2 duties and tasks to new hires.Consequence of Error/JudgementAttention to detail is required; repeated tasks may be necessary to ensure protocols are followed correctly.Incorrect decisions could jeopardise animal health or compromise research studies.Inappropriate judgment may impact facility success, increase expenses, time loss, and reputational damage.SupervisionReceives direction from the Director of Facilities/Facility Manager and supervisors; works under general supervision.May distribute work assignments to other employees and train new staff in operational procedures.Minimum QualificationsHigh school graduation with some additional training in a related field and a minimum of two years of related experience.Willingness to respect diverse perspectives and commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.Preferred QualificationsUndergraduate degree in a relevant field or graduation from a technical college or institute.B.Sc.



degree in an animal-related field and/or AHT diploma is an asset.CALAS Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) preferred.Experience with small animals in a research capacity and in a CL2 setting.Working with industry and/or research teams is an asset.Skill Set and CompetenciesSound theoretical and practical knowledge of laboratory animal science and veterinary technology.Knowledge of biomedical research, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and intensive/critical care.Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, organisational and problem‑solving skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team; thorough, accurate, anddetail-oriented.Physical demands: lifting up to 25 kg, continuous walking, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting and turning.Operating job-related equipment and moderate software proficiency (Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MOSAIC, Workday).Ability to maintain and upgrade training, train others, and apply policies, SOPs, and CCAC guidelines.Work schedule flexibility: willing to work weekends, evenings, and statutory holidays.Equity, Diversity, and InclusionAll qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; Canadians and permanentresidents will be given priority.
