Job Summary
Sanctum Retreat is seeking a new member for our team. In this role, you will be instrumental in ensuring smooth kitchen operations, delivering exceptional food quality, and maintaining high standards of food safety. Your energy and attention to detail will help create a welcoming environment where attention to detail and hospitality cultivate a welcoming environment for guests.
This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to develop your skills in food preparation, guest experience support, and logistics skills collaborating with a small team to create a caring community environment for guests.
Sanctum's Mission
Sanctum Retreat is a registered charity, operating west of Caroline, AB, since 2004. Situated next to the Raven River, surrounded by evergreen forest, Sanctum's environment provides a calm and grounding space for communities to come together for organized events. Sanctum hosts one group at a time, and each program is unique in its cadence, intention, and outcome.
Events are always one group at a time, and frequently faith based, education space based, healthcare space based, or social service space based.
Cook: Role Description
General Responsibilities
- Maintain a welcoming and hospitable workplace for guests and team members.
- Demonstrate flexibility in responding to changing needs or priorities during retreats and between groups.
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, safety, and efficiency throughout the kitchen
- Compliance with food safety regulations
- Report any safety hazards, needed repairs, or incidents
- Receiving groceries and assessing food safety of delivery
- Maintain professional boundaries with guests while offering assistance when needed.
During a Retreat Primarily, Cook’s efforts shift towards providing for group’s menu:
- Leading preparation of meals
- Ensuring food is safe
- Ensuring food is flavourful
- Ensuring meal is on time
- Modifying menu based on stock availability
- Record keeping for meals
Secondarily, Cook’s efforts shift towards stock management:
- Identifying stock that needs to be used, and taking steps to ensure it does not go to waste.
- Keeping stock areas organized
- Removing stock that is out of date from circulation
- Reporting stock needs
Between Retreats Primarily, Cook’s efforts shift towards stock management and documentation review:
- Identifying stock that needs to be used, and taking steps to ensure it does not go to waste.
- Keeping stock areas organized
- Removing stock that is out of date from circulation
- Reporting stock needs
- Review submitted documentation from Kitchen Team to ensure accuracy
Secondarily, Cook’s efforts shift towards training, experimentation, and documentation:
- Training Kitchen Associates in new methods
- Preparing small portions of new dishes to share with Team
- Writing methods for new and existing dishes
- Proposing modifications to the existing menu
Communication and Accountability
- Any changes to scheduling or assigned tasks must be communicated clearly and in a timely manner.
- Confidentiality must be maintained regarding guest stays, staff matters, and internal operations.
Physical Requirements
- Strong sense of smell and taste to make appropriate modifications to flavour of food
- 5 or more years of cheffing experience
- Strong knife skills
- Red Seal preferred
- Standing, walking, and lifting for extended periods.
- Lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs.
- Bending, stretching, and working in awkward positions.
- Availability to work weekends, holidays, and flexible hours as needed
Pay: $26.00-$36.00 per hour Expected hours: 25.0 – 40.0 per week
