Crate Builder
Reports to: Warehouse Supervisor
Department: Supply Chain
W.R. Davis Engineering Ltd (Davis) is a agile mid-sized company specializing in the design of infrared (IR) signature solutions for both naval and aerospace platforms. Davis performs ground-up design, development and manufacture at our Ottawa, Canada facility. More background may be found at www.davis-eng.com.
We are looking for a skilled and dependable Crate Builder to join our Supply Chain team.
What You’ll Do
Crate Building & Packaging – Primary Responsibility
- Measure finished product or parts and fabricate containers in the appropriate manner for shipment.
- Build containers around the equipment or fabricate the container and place equipment within.
- Use a variety of woodworking tools, such as circular saws, chop saws, hammers, nail guns, etc., to fabricate large wood crates and skids for shipment of equipment.
- Pack, skid, band, brace, cover, and weigh parts and/or the fabricated container as required
- Check equipment crates versus shipping lists and drawings prior to buttoning up to ensure all equipment sections, additional parts and project documents are inside the crate
- Coordinate with engineering to document crated equipment by photograph prior to buttoning up
- Maintain project crating database and initiate new instructions per project
- Maintain a clean and organized yard and woodworking area
- Monitor wood, packaging materials, and other supplies and ensure required materials and tools are ordered in a timely manner.
Shipping and Receiving – Secondary Responsibility
- Load and unload company vehicles and assist with the safe movement of equipment and materials.
- Perform daily inspections and ensure company vehicles are kept clean, properly fueled, and ready for use.
- Assist with shipping and receiving activities as required.
- Assist with the preparation/packaging of outbound orders.
- Support other Supply Chain activities and complete additional duties as assigned by the Warehouse Supervisor.
What You’ll Bring
- 5+ years of carpentry experience
- Certificate of Qualification in carpentry
- Strong understanding of shop mathematics and the ability to accurately calculate measurements and dimensions.
- Strong knowledge of woodworking techniques and practices.
- Skilled and confident using a wide range of hand and power tools.
- Comfortable reading and working from blueprints, drawings, sketches, measurements, and verbal instructions.
- Experience safely operating hoists and cranes
- 2+ years forklift experience
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s Licence with a clean driving record
- Comfortable using computers and maintaining digital records and documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality and safety.
- Reliable team player with strong communication,
problem-solving, and time-management skills
- The ability to obtain and maintain a Controlled Goods Program clearance
