UNF Avalon is the Avalon Branch of the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada. Since 2022, we have grown from a volunteer-led community initiative into a provincially funded organization supporting Ukrainian newcomers across Newfoundland and Labrador through settlement, employment, entrepreneurship, education and cultural programming.
Our programs include Ridna Shkola Ukrainian heritage school, summer day camps, a Ukrainian-language library, community programming in St. John’s, a community hub in Corner Brook, and more.
We are looking for a Culture & Community Coordinator to help us deliver for our community.
The Opportunity The Culture & Community Coordinator is a hands-on community programming role for someone who enjoys bringing people together, building relationships and turning ideas into successful programs and events.
You will coordinate Ukrainian cultural celebrations and festivals, newcomer orientation sessions, informal language-practice activities, integration programs, volunteer engagement, and community programming through our community space.
Support for various UNF Avalon programs, including Ridna Shkola and our summer camps, will also be part of the position as required.
This role combines program and event coordination, community engagement, volunteer management, partnership development, participant support, communications and reporting.
Accurate documentation is also an important part of the role. Our funding depends on reliable participant records, activity data and reporting, and you will help maintain the information that demonstrates the reach and impact of our programs.
You will report to the Manager, Culture & Community and collaborate closely with colleagues across employment, entrepreneurship, settlement and education.
Key Responsibilities
Program & Event Coordination
Plan, coordinate and deliver Ukrainian cultural celebrations, festivals, community events, workshops and other activities.
Manage event logistics, including venues, schedules, materials, volunteers, partners and on-site coordination.
Support community-led programming through our community space, including arts, dance, music, children’s activities and other community initiatives.
Ensure programs are welcoming, well organized and responsive to community needs.
Newcomer Engagement & Community Connections
Deliver Newfoundland and Labrador orientation sessions and informal language-practice activities for newly arrived families.
Build positive relationships with participants and community members.
Support integration programs and activities that encourage newcomers to connect with the broader community.
Support member and community-led programs as they develop.
Volunteer Coordination
Support the development and implementation of UNF Avalon’s volunteer program.
Recruit, screen, orient and support volunteers.
Coordinate volunteer placements and schedules for programs and events.
Support volunteer recognition,
engagement and retention.
Maintain accurate volunteer records.
Community Partnerships & Outreach
Represent UNF Avalon at multicultural, community and partner events across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Develop and maintain relationships with community organizations, cultural groups, businesses, service providers and other partners.
Identify opportunities for collaboration and community engagement.
Support outreach and promotion of UNF Avalon programs through appropriate communication channels, including social media.
Education & Youth Programming Support
Provide coordination support to Ridna Shkola Ukrainian heritage school as required, including registration, participant records, communications and promotion.
Support summer camp administration and participant coordination as required.
Follow organizational policies and safeguarding requirements when working with children and youth.
Documentation, Reporting & Communications
Maintain accurate and confidential participant, registration and attendance records.
Ensure program information is documented consistently and in a timely manner.
Prepare information and supporting documentation for quarterly funder reporting.
Track program activities, participation, outcomes, challenges and lessons learned.
Collect photographs, participant feedback, program materials and community stories, with appropriate consent, to support reporting and communications.
What Success Looks Like
During your first year
Community programs and events are delivered according to the approved programming calendar.
Participants experience welcoming, well-organized and meaningful activities.
Participant and attendance records are accurate, complete and properly maintained.
Quarterly reporting information is provided to the Manager within five business days of each quarter-end.
A clear and effective volunteer program is established, with volunteers who are trained, engaged and returning.
Community partnerships are strengthened and new opportunities for collaboration are developed.
UNF Avalon’s community programming is visible and accessible to the communities we serve.
What We’re Looking For
Required
Fluency in Ukrainian and English. Ukrainian-language proficiency is an essential requirement because the position delivers programming directly to Ukrainian-speaking newcomers.
Demonstrated experience organizing and delivering community events, cultural activities, festivals, workshops or similar programs.
Strong knowledge of Ukrainian culture, traditions and community life.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, activities, partners and deadlines.
Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records and complete administrative tasks independently and on time.
Proficiency with spreadsheets and standard office software.
Robust written and verbal communication skills in English.
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with participants, volunteers, partners and colleagues.
Sound judgment and discretion when handling confidential personal information.
Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team environment.
Assets
Experience working with newcomer, immigrant, settlement or multicultural organizations.
Experience working in a nonprofit or community-based organization.
Experience with government or funder reporting.
Experience recruiting, training or coordinating volunteers.
Experience developing community partnerships.
Experience in event promotion, social media, communications or community outreach.
Experience working with children or youth programs.
Experience delivering community-based programming in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Employment Conditions
Full-time, 37.5 hours per week.
Term position until March 31, 2027, with potential renewal subject to continued funding and organizational needs.
Community programming may require evening and weekend work. Time off in lieu will be provided in accordance with organizational policy.
A valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle, or the ability to travel regionally for evening and weekend programming, is required. Mileage is reimbursed.
A satisfactory Certificate of Conduct is required before the start date. A Vulnerable Sector Check will also be required for duties involving children and youth.
A signed confidentiality agreement is a condition of employment.
