Electrical Designer – Full Time – Onsite

Industrial Plankton’s new electrical designer will support the Engineering Manager by contributing towards the development of high-tech bioreactor systems, as part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of mechanical, software, and electrical designers, as well as biologists.

You will be responsible for all electrical design aspects of the bioreactor, including power electronics, actuators, sensors, control systems, code compliance, and PCBs. You will also support our customer service and production staff by providing expert technical advice on the electrical system.

Key Responsibilities

- Design of AC/DC electrical systems for commercial bioreactors, as well as prototype systems
- Designing control systems, combining touchscreens, single-board computers, PCBs, microcontrollers, sensors, and actuators
- Power electronics design, systems connecting mains power in various countries to drive pumps, power light ballasts, etc., including appropriate circuit protection
- Designing and wiring electrical enclosures and wiring harnesses
- Ensuring compliance with UL 508A and other applicable standards
- Conducting electrical testing for validation of performance and reliability
- Working closely with manufacturers and purchasing to procure PCBs and other electrical components
- Producing & maintaining electrical schematics and work instructions for use in production and by external suppliers
- Creating and maintaining accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Documenting and implementing engineering changes
- Conducting technical risk assessments of electrical systems
- Understanding and adhering to electrical standards
- Performing electrical QA to support production
- Wiring and assembling of prototypes, and in support of production
- Participate in process improvements, R&D;, and Customer Support as required




- Maintaining a clean workstation, tools, and production floor
- Performing other tasks as required to support the business

Qualifications & Skills

- Electrical Engineering Degree or equivalent, with significant hands-on experience
- 5-10 years of product manufacturing experience, directly bringing products from inception through to production and supporting their long-term use.
- Familiarity with Canadian Electrical Code and UL 508A
- Experience designing AC/DC systems, wiring, and prototyping
- Experience troubleshooting with oscilloscopes, power meters, multimeters, etc.
- Experience Soldering
- Experience working with and designing PCBs
- Experience working with ESD-sensitive electronics
- Attention to detail when following written and verbal instructions in English
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision, or as part of a team
- Maintain a positive and respectful attitude with coworkers
- Familiar with manufacturing environments & producing commercial products
- Thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
- Detail oriented
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Great organization and time management skills
- Fluent in English (Ability to read, comprehend, and follow verbal directions precisely)
- Ability to communicate directions efficiently and respectfully
- Must be legally allowed to work in Canada

Nice to haves:

- Software experience/proficiency in ladder logic, Arduino (C++17), AdvancedHMI (running on .NET Framework 4.5 (VB.NET/C#), and Modbus TCP/IP communications

Salary Range: $90K - $92K CAD
