The Bear River First Nation is looking for a motivated and reliable employee to join our team as a Finance Assistant. Reporting to the Finance Director, the Finance Assistant is responsible for providing financial and administrative support to the organization. Their role involves accurately preparing and processing invoices, entering data into accounting software, assistance with payroll preparation, record-keeping and reporting.
This position requires a strong attention to detail, organization, and knowledge of financial processes and accounting principles.
This opportunity will start out at two days per week (in a temporary setting) until the new office building is complete (May 2027) and will increase to four, possibly four and a half days a week.
ACCOUNTS PAYABLE/RECEIVABLE
- Enter financial transactions/invoices into accounting software
- Prepare cheque runs and EFT
- Checking for accuracy in reports, figures, and postings
- Interacting with management, customers, staff, and vendors
- Liaise with signers and follow up for signings of cheque requisitions and cheques
- Filing of finance backup
- Prepare reconciliation, breakdown of and allocation of visa expenses on monthly basis
- Assist in the preparation of reports required by funders
- Managing accounts payable and accounts receivable
PAYROLL
- Calculate employee wages, deductions, and benefits.
- Prepare and distribute payroll checks or direct deposits.
- Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with tax regulations.
- Maintenance and monitoring of leave credits
- Respond to and manage Payroll enquiries
OTHER
- Assist with bank reconciliations; investigate and resolve discrepancies
- Work with the Finance Director for the organization’s budget preparation
- Work with and attend to the external auditors
- Other duties as assigned by the management
Education Required:
- College diploma in Accounting, Finance or equivalent
- Experience in a similar setting
- Good knowledge of accounting principles and bookkeeping procedures
- Experience working with First Nations is an asset
- Clean Criminal Record check
Skills Required:
- Excellent analytical, financial, and mathematical abilities
- Proficiency in using accounting software, Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suites
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Extremely trustworthy and professionally-minded
- Strong business and written communication skills
- Multi-tasking, problem-solving skills and working in a fast-paced workplace
- Ability to work under pressure and tight deadlines
