As a Mi’kmaq First Nation Band Government, Bear River First Nation is dedicated to providing a number of community-oriented services related to areas such as heritage, cultural, recreation, learning, and health.
Reporting to the Band Administrator, the Director of Finance will be responsible for all aspects of the financial function. The position will be responsible for leading and overseeing all finance, accounting, and budgeting functions.
Responsibilities The Finance Director, will be responsible for a variety of financial and accounting functions for all aspects of the operations. Examples of specific duties include (but are not limited to):
Evaluate, maintain and continuously enhance the finance functions of the organization, including monitoring and reporting organizational performance;
Appropriately work to manage costs and facilitate efficiency in operational processes associated with all aspects of the operations;
Review and analyze financial documentation to determine potential areas of improvement;
Prepare monthly/quarterly/year external and internal financial reporting related to the financial position of the organization including revenues and expenses;
Prepare budgets for expenditures of the organization for approval of the Band Administrator/Band Government;
Implement and maintain productive functioning and documentation for all financial systems including receipts, disbursements, billing, bookkeeping, and accounting;
Ensure month/quarter/year-end processes are completed in a timely manner to ensure accurate financial reporting;
Review,
develop and maintain internal controls and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, budgets and actual expenditures;
Coordinate, support and prepare working papers for the annual financial audit process;
Provide valuable financial insights and analysis to the Band Administrator/Band Government in decision making;
Ensure that employees comply with finance and administrative and procedures throughout the organization;
Maintain oversight over the Accounts Payable Clerk including mentoring and coaching;
Develop, implement and regular monitor of Key Performance Indicators as they relate to the accounting and finance functions;
Manage performance targets by directing and overseeing the work of employees in the accounting and finance functions to achieve maximum efficiency;
Complete administrative tasks as required;
Ensure information is confidential and secure continually;
Practice understanding of general accounting principles, regulatory standards and compliance requirements at all times;
Requirements
Degree or diploma designation in accounting or related field of study
Significant experience (preferably 7-10 years) in a similar role
Possession of a recognized professional Accounting or Finance designation (CPA) is preferred
Certified Aboriginal Financial Management Professional (CAFM) is preferred
Extensive knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and Canadian public sector accounting standards
Ability to analyze financial data and prepare financial reports, statements and projections
Strong attention to detail and confidentiality
Ability to work in a team environment
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines
Hours of Work:
35 hours per week with designated office hours
Success in this role requires a detail-oriented individual who has an aptitude for numbers, is community-minded, and has the ability to work in a flexible team environment. You have well-developed organizational skills, and are able to complete tasks in a timely manner. The successful candidate will work to ensure consistency and accuracy across all accounting functions.
