Piscine Fishing Company is part of Piscine Energetics, a British Columbia company focused on the responsible harvest of Mysis shrimp and the development of sustainable aquatic nutrition products. Our Okanagan Lake fishery offers genuine commercial fishing work on sheltered inland water, with crews returning to shore after each shift.

POSITION SUMMARY

Piscine Fishing Company is hiring a reliable Night Fishing Vessel Skipper for commercial Mysis shrimp harvesting on Okanagan Lake. The skipper operates the powered trawl vessel while towing an unpowered catch boat connected to the fishing system. For most of the fishing night, the skipper works independently on the trawl vessel and coordinates closely with the Catch Boat Operator.

This is an inland, sheltered-water commercial fishing position. Crews return to shore every morning and sleep at home rather than remaining offshore or aboard for extended trips.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

· Safely operate and navigate the trawl vessel during nighttime commercial fishing operations.

· Conduct pre-departure vessel and equipment checks before each fishing shift.

· Coordinate deployment, towing and retrieval of the trawl system with the Catch Boat Operator.

· Monitor vessel handling, tow behaviour, weather, wind, equipment condition and operational risk throughout the night.

· Maintain clear communication with the Catch Boat Operator and respond promptly to changes in catch flow, equipment condition or safety concerns.

· Make conservative go/no-go and return-to-shore decisions based on weather, vessel condition and crew safety.

· Identify mechanical problems early and perform basic troubleshooting on small engines, pumps, electrical systems, winches and related equipment.

· Assist with routine maintenance, cleaning, organization, rigging, net work, repairs and vessel preparation when fishing is cancelled or ends early.

· Complete basic logs and promptly report defects, incidents, near misses and maintenance needs.

· Help maintain a professional, sober, safe and respectful fishing operation.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

· Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)



and legal eligibility to operate the vessel in sheltered waters.

· 2+ years of commercial vessel operating, commercial fishing, workboat or comparable professional marine experience is preferred. Exceptional candidates with strong transferable marine experience may also be considered.

· Demonstrated small-vessel operating experience and sound nighttime navigation judgment.

· Comfort around engines, pumps, mechanical systems and marine equipment.

· Ability to work alone for extended periods while remaining alert and in continuous communication with the catch boat.

· Physically capable of assisting with fishing gear, lines, nets and normal marine-deck work.

· Valid driver's licence and reliable transportation to the operating base.

· Ability to work a rotating night schedule, generally sunset to sunrise.

STRONGLY PREFERRED

· Commercial fishing, towing, workboat or marine operations experience.

· Fishing Master III or IV, SVOP, MED, ROC-M/ROC-MC, marine first aid or equivalent marine training.

· Mechanical aptitude and experience troubleshooting small engines and vessel systems.

· Experience supervising or coordinating another vessel/operator during marine work.

COMPENSATION

Fishing shifts are paid on a flat-shift basis (guaranteed hourly rate) plus a catch incentive. Expected base compensation is $300-$325 per fishing shift, depending on experience and qualifications, plus harvest bonus.

Where a fishing shift is materially shortened by a mechanical or operational issue, the company uses a partial-shift payment structure. If fishing is cancelled but useful vessel, gear or shop work is available, employees may be assigned paid maintenance work rather than losing the entire shift.

SCHEDULE & SEASON The normal fishing season is approximately March through November,



with immediate seasonal work available. Fishing occurs at night and generally runs from sunset to sunrise, typically 10-12 hours depending on the time of year and fishing conditions. The expected rotation is approximately 6 nights on / 4 nights off, subject to weather, fishing conditions and operational requirements.

Piscine aims to provide predictable rotations and timely communication regarding go/no-go decisions. When fishing cannot proceed, scheduled employees may be assigned paid vessel, gear, cleaning, organization or maintenance work. Winter work may be available for mechanically inclined employees, but the primary position is seasonal.

SAFETY & FITNESS FOR DUTY

This is a safety-sensitive marine position. The successful candidate must be physically capable of performing the duties of the role, able to work safely during extended overnight shifts, and report to work and remain fit for duty and free from impairment. The skipper must remain alert and capable of making sound safety-critical decisions throughout the shift, manage fatigue responsibly, and safely perform vessel, deck, equipment and emergency-response duties in changing weather and operating conditions.

The skipper is expected to stop or terminate an operation whenever weather, vessel condition, equipment or any other factor creates an unacceptable safety risk.
