Summerhill Market is looking for a Prepared Foods Packager to join the Packaging Department at our Railside production facility. Reporting to the Packaging Supervisor, this is a hands-on position responsible for portioning, weighing, packaging and labelling prepared foods according to established company standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Portion and package a variety of prepared foods, including entrées, side dishes, soups, sauces and other ready-to-eat products
- Use digital scales to accurately weigh products according to established portion specifications
- Scoop, ladle and portion food into the correct containers while maintaining consistency and presentation
- Safely handle and move large pots, food containers, trays and other production materials
- Apply the correct labels, date codes, ingredient information and product identification to all packaged items
- Inspect containers, seals, labels and finished products to ensure they meet company quality standards
- Verify that product weights, packaging and quantities are accurate
- Follow production sheets, packaging instructions and directions from the Packaging Supervisor
- Monitor products for quality, freshness and presentation and immediately report any concerns
- Organize completed products for storage and distribution to our retail locations
- Follow FIFO and proper product-rotation procedures
- Maintain a clean, organized and food-safe workstation throughout the shift
- Follow all food-safety,
allergen-control, sanitation, HACCP and workplace health and safety procedures
- Wash and sanitize packaging tools, scales, worktables and equipment as required
- Work collaboratively with the kitchen, packaging and shipping teams to meet daily production deadlines
- Assist with other production and packaging duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications
- Previous experience in food production, food packaging, catering, manufacturing or a commercial kitchen is an asset
- Comfortable using a digital scale and following specific portion weights
- Comfortable scooping, ladling and handling prepared foods
- Strong attention to detail, especially when checking weights, labels, dates and product presentation
- Able to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
- Dependable, punctual and comfortable working in a fast-paced production environment
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Good organizational and time-management skills
- Food Handler Certification is considered an asset
- High school diploma or equivalent is preferred
Physical Requirements
- Able to stand and perform repetitive packaging tasks for the duration of an eight-nine hour shift
- Able to regularly reach, bend, twist, kneel, push and pull
- Able to safely lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Comfortable handling and moving large pots and containers, using appropriate equipment or team lifting when required
- Comfortable working in refrigerated or cooler environments and entering freezers when required
- Comfortable working around food-production equipment and in a busy commercial kitchen environment
Availability
- Available to work eight-nine hour shifts
- Flexible availability, including early mornings, evenings,
weekends and holidays as required
- Reliable transportation to our Railside production facility
