About Us The Alberni Valley Hospice Society operates Ty Watson House, a four-bed community hospice providing compassionate end-of-life care in a home-like setting for residents and families throughout the Alberni Valley.

Ty Watson House is a 114-year-old heritage home that requires ongoing care and attention. We are seeking a reliable, skilled, and community-minded individual to help maintain our facility and grounds while supporting our mission of providing comfort, dignity, and compassionate care.

This position is ideal for an experienced, semi-retired, or retired tradesperson or handyman who enjoys meaningful work, takes pride in maintaining a beautiful property, and would value being part of a caring and dedicated team.

Position Summary The Handyman / Maintenance Support Worker is responsible for performing general maintenance and repair tasks both inside and outside Ty Watson House, helping ensure the home remains safe, welcoming, and well-maintained for residents, families, volunteers, and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Building Maintenance

- Complete minor repairs and maintenance tasks throughout the hospice
- Repair doors, hardware, fixtures, furniture, and equipment as needed
- Perform basic plumbing, painting, carpentry, and other general handyman duties
- Monitor the condition of the facility and advise Facility Manager of maintenance concerns

Grounds Maintenance

- Perform occasional lawn mowing and trimming
- Assist with minor landscaping tasks and exterior upkeep

Operational Support

- Transport recycling to recycling facilities on a weekly basis
- Assist with occasional purchasing and pickup of supplies for the hospice
- Help move furniture,



equipment, or supplies when required
- Support staff with other minor facility-related tasks as needed

Qualifications The successful candidate will:

- Have experience in general building maintenance, property maintenance, construction, or related trades
- Possess troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Be able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Be physically capable of performing maintenance and groundskeeping duties
- Have a valid BC driver's license and reliable transportation
- Successfully complete a Criminal Record Check
- Be dependable, trustworthy, and respectful when working in a hospice setting
- Have a positive attitude and a willingness to contribute to a supportive team culture

Preferred

- Experience with older homes and heritage buildings
- Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, and minor repairs
- Retired or semi-retired individuals looking for meaningful part-time work are encouraged to apply
