Horizon Industrial Services Ltd.

Calgary / Airdrie, Alberta

Full-Time

$42.00–$48.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications

About Horizon Industrial Services

Horizon Industrial Services Ltd. is a growing industrial services company based in Airdrie, Alberta, providing millwright, material handling, machinery installation, maintenance, fabrication, and project services throughout Western Canada.

We work in active industrial environments across a variety of industries and customer sites. Our work is project-based and wide-ranging—our employees are not performing the same task in the same shop every day.

Our purpose is simple

Build outstanding teams. Solve hard problems.

The Position

Horizon Industrial Services is looking for an experienced Red Seal Journeyperson Welder/Fabricator to join our field services team.

This position requires a fabricator who welds—not simply a welder.

Candidates must be capable of independently measuring, laying out, cutting, grinding, fitting, fabricating, and welding components from drawings, sketches, and field measurements.

This is not a production welding position where components are prepared and fitted by someone else. We are looking for a well-rounded tradesperson who can take a fabrication task from initial measurement and layout through fabrication, welding, and installation.

The successful candidate will work alongside Horizon's millwrights and other trades on a variety of customer projects throughout Calgary and surrounding areas, with travel to other locations as project requirements dictate.

This will also be Horizon Industrial Services' first dedicated welding position. For the right individual, there will be an opportunity to help Horizon develop and grow its welding and fabrication capabilities as the company expands.

Initial Project The successful candidate's first assignment is expected to be at an industrial customer facility in the Calgary area.

Work will include

- Equipment skid fabrication.
- Non-pressure piping and vessel-related fabrication.
- Structural and miscellaneous fabrication.
- Field measuring and layout.
- Cutting, grinding, fitting, and welding.
- Fabrication and modification of equipment supports, brackets, frames, and related components.
- Working directly with Horizon's millwrights to position, mount, modify, and install industrial equipment.
- Field modifications where existing conditions differ from drawings or planned installations.

Following completion of the initial assignment, the successful candidate will continue working across Horizon customer sites on a variety of industrial fabrication, installation, maintenance, and project work.

Typical Responsibilities

Responsibilities will vary by project and may include:
- Structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication.
- Equipment skid and base fabrication.
- Equipment supports, brackets, frames, guards, platforms, and miscellaneous fabrications.
- Pipe fabrication and fitting.
- Non-pressure piping and vessel-related fabrication.
- Field modifications to existing equipment and structures.
- Measuring and laying out work from drawings, sketches, and field conditions.
- Cutting material using saws,

torches, plasma, and other appropriate equipment.
- Grinding, preparing, beveling, and finishing material.
- Fitting components accurately prior to welding.
- Welding using the appropriate processes for the application.
- Reading and interpreting fabrication, mechanical, and installation drawings.
- Working from field measurements where detailed fabrication drawings may not be available.
- Identifying practical fabrication solutions when actual site conditions differ from drawings.
- Equipment repair and modification.
- Working alongside millwrights during machinery and equipment installation.
- Assisting with rigging and installation activities where appropriate.
- Maintaining welding and fabrication equipment.
- Maintaining clean, organized, and professional work areas.
- Working safely within active industrial facilities and around other trades.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have

- Valid Journeyperson Welder certification with Red Seal endorsement.
- Demonstrated industrial welding and fabrication experience.
- Strong fitting and fabrication skills.
- Strong measuring and layout capabilities.
- Ability to independently cut, prepare, fit, fabricate, and weld components.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication and mechanical drawings.
- Experience using common fabrication equipment, power tools, and material-preparation equipment.
- Experience with welding processes applicable to industrial fabrication.
- Ability to work safely and independently in field environments.
- Ability to identify and solve practical fabrication problems in the field.
- Strong attention to detail and workmanship.
- Valid driver's licence and reliable transportation.
- Ability and willingness to travel between customer sites.
- Ability to supply standard personal hand tools appropriate to the trade.

Preferred Qualifications / Assets The following would be considered strong assets:
- Current CWB welding qualifications.
- Structural steel fabrication experience.
- Equipment skid fabrication experience.
- Pipe fitting and pipe fabrication experience.
- Stainless steel fabrication experience.
- Experience with multiple welding processes.
- Industrial construction, maintenance, or shutdown experience.
- Experience working alongside millwrights and other industrial trades.
- Machinery and equipment installation experience.
- Rigging experience.
- Forklift, aerial work platform, fall protection, first aid, and other applicable industrial safety certifications.
- Previous experience acting as a lead hand, welding supervisor, or senior fabricator.

Welding Program Development Because this will be Horizon's first dedicated welding position, experience helping establish or develop a company welding program would be considered a significant asset.

Relevant experience may include

- Working within a CWB-certified organization.
- Assisting with CWB certification or audit processes.
- Knowledge of applicable welding standards and quality requirements.
- Welding procedure development and implementation.
- Welder qualification and documentation requirements.
- Establishing welding equipment, tooling, and consumable requirements.
- Developing welding/fabrication processes and quality-control practices.
- Maintaining welding documentation and records.
- Mentoring or providing technical direction to other welders/fabricators.

The successful candidate may have the opportunity to work with Horizon leadership to help develop the company's welding and fabrication program and support future CWB certification as the division grows. Previous experience developing a welding program or obtaining CWB certification is an asset, not a requirement for the position.

What Success Looks Like

At Horizon, being able to make a good weld is only part of this position.

A successful Industrial Welder/Fabricator can look at the complete task, determine what needs to be done, measure accurately, prepare and fit material properly, complete high-quality welds, and help install the finished product.

We value tradespeople who

- Take ownership of their work.
- Think ahead.
- Pay attention to details.
- Work accurately without requiring constant supervision.
- Identify problems before they become expensive problems.
- Communicate when something doesn't look right.
- Work effectively alongside other trades.
- Adapt to changing field conditions.
- Help the rest of the crew succeed.
- Leave behind work they are proud to put their name on.

Work Environment This is primarily a field-based industrial position.

Employees should expect to work at multiple customer sites rather than reporting to the same location every day. Work locations, schedules, and project durations will vary depending on customer and project requirements.

Some projects may require

- Early starts.
- Extended shifts.
- Overtime.
- Weekend work.
- Out-of-town travel.

The ability and willingness to work in a project-based industrial environment is an important requirement of the position.

Compensation

$42.00–$48.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.

Compensation within the range will reflect factors including fabrication capability, industrial field experience, CWB qualifications, pipe and structural fabrication experience, welding-process versatility, and the ability to contribute to the development of Horizon's welding program.

Overtime will be paid in accordance with applicable employment standards and Horizon Industrial Services policies.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume outlining both your welding and fabrication experience.

Applicants are encouraged to clearly identify experience with:

- Industrial fabrication.
- Fitting and layout.
- Skid fabrication.
- Pipe fabrication.
- Structural fabrication.
- Field installation and modification.
- CWB-certified work environments.
- Welding program development.
