About RKM Services Ltd.
RKM Services Ltd. is an established industrial construction and maintenance contractor serving the mining, pulp and paper, energy, manufacturing, bulk-material-handling and heavy industrial sectors throughout Western Canada.
Our work includes mechanical equipment installation, process piping, structural steel, fabrication, plant maintenance, shutdowns and major capital projects. We are seeking an experienced Intermediate Industrial Mechanical/Piping Estimator to join our Langley-based estimating team.
Position Overview The Intermediate Industrial Mechanical/Piping Estimator will be responsible for independently preparing complete and competitive estimates for defined industrial mechanical and piping scopes.
The successful candidate must understand piping materials, specifications, fabrication and field-installation requirements. They must be capable of accurately quantifying piping, fittings, flanges, valves, welds, supports and mechanical equipment, along with the basic structural components associated with industrial mechanical installations.
This position requires strong Bluebeam proficiency and the ability to review and interpret AutoCAD drawings, 3D models, P&IDs;, piping isometrics and other technical documentation. The estimator will work closely with RKM’s operations, project-management, procurement and senior estimating personnel to develop practical and executable project estimates, along with providing AutoCAD Drawings as required.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently prepare complete estimates for defined industrial mechanical, piping and equipment-installation scopes.
- Review drawings, specifications, P&IDs;, piping isometrics, equipment layouts, data sheets, schedules and contract documents.
- Complete detailed quantity takeoffs for:
- Carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy, HDPE, PVC and other piping systems.
- Pipe, fittings, flanges, gaskets, bolting and specialty piping components.
- Manual, actuated and specialty valves.
- Shop and field welds, including weld counts by size, type and material.
- Pipe supports, guides, anchors, hangers and related structural components.
- Pumps, tanks, pressure vessels, process equipment and packaged mechanical systems.
- Basic structural steel, access platforms, ladders and miscellaneous metals associated with mechanical installations.
- Insulation, coatings, testing, flushing and commissioning requirements where applicable.
- Develop labour estimates based on quantities, productivity factors, construction methodology, trade jurisdiction and applicable collective agreements.
- Estimate fabrication, delivery, rigging, crane, equipment, supervision, indirect and subcontracted costs.
- Review CAD drawings and 3D models to confirm quantities,
identify interfaces and assess constructability.
- Use Bluebeam Revu to complete digital takeoffs, measurements, markups, overlays and drawing comparisons.
- Prepare material and equipment requests for quotation and evaluate supplier and subcontractor pricing.
- Identify scope gaps, drawing discrepancies, constructability concerns, commercial risks and potential cost-saving opportunities.
- Develop estimating assumptions, clarifications, exclusions and qualifications.
- Participate in site visits, pre-bid meetings, tender reviews and estimate reconciliation meetings.
- Assist with the preparation of bid schedules, execution plans, manpower forecasts and preliminary project strategies.
- Support the development of lump-sum, unit-rate, time-and-material and construction-management proposals.
- Complete estimate reviews and formal handovers to project-management and operations teams.
- Maintain organized estimate files, historical pricing information, labour-productivity data and supplier quotations.
- Support change-order estimates and project cost reviews when required.
- Work collaboratively with project managers, superintendents, procurement personnel, subcontractors, suppliers and clients.
Required Qualifications
- Three to five years of relevant estimating experience, preferably within industrial construction, process piping, mechanical contracting or fabrication.
- Demonstrated ability to independently complete estimates for defined piping and mechanical scopes.
- Strong knowledge of piping materials, specifications, fittings, valves, flanges, weld requirements and pipe-support systems.
- Practical understanding of piping fabrication and field-installation methodologies.
- Experience estimating mechanical equipment installation, rigging and associated structural components.
- Strong ability to interpret P&IDs;, piping isometrics, general-arrangement drawings, equipment layouts, specifications and technical data sheets.
- Proficiency with Bluebeam Revu, including digital takeoffs, measurements, overlays, markups and drawing comparisons.
- Ability to competently review AutoCAD drawings and 2D or 3D CAD models.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
- Understanding of construction sequencing, labour productivity, equipment requirements and project indirect costs.
- Experience obtaining, reviewing and leveling supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail, organization and time-management abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple estimates and meet fixed tender deadlines.
- Valid driver’s licence and willingness to attend occasional site visits.
Preferred Qualifications
- P.Eng, EIT or Red Seal related industrial trade certification.
- Diploma or degree in mechanical engineering technology, construction management, engineering or a related discipline.
- Previous field experience in industrial piping, mechanical construction or fabrication.
- Experience working in mining, pulp and paper, energy, chemical-processing, manufacturing or bulk-material-handling facilities.
- Knowledge of ASME piping codes, including ASME B31.1 and B31.3.
- Familiarity with welding procedures, weld mapping, non-destructive examination and pressure-testing requirements.
- Familiarity with Autodesk Navisworks, Revit, Spool Fab or other 3D model-review software.
- Experience working within unionized, multi-trade construction environments.
- Knowledge of collective agreements, trade jurisdictions and industrial labour-rate structures.
- Experience estimating shutdown, maintenance and brownfield construction work.
Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate is a practical and detail-oriented estimator who understands how industrial piping and mechanical systems are fabricated and installed—not simply how quantities are measured from drawings. They can independently develop a complete estimate for a clearly defined scope, recognize missing information, identify constructability and execution risks, and prepare clear assumptions and qualifications. They are comfortable working with incomplete tender documents and collaborating with operations personnel to develop a realistic execution strategy.
