About this opportunity The Nunavut Department of Education, Qikiqtani School Operations, is seeking Language Specialists who are committed to supporting strong learning environments for Nunavut’s students.

As a Language Specialist in Nunavut, you will support language development through culturally respectful practice grounded in community relationships.

About the School

Located in the picturesque hamlet of Igloolik, Nunavut, Sivuniit Middle School serves the local community. The school has a population of approximately 165 students in a 7-9 setting with a staff of 24. The school and community are steeped in a rich history of Inuit culture.

Required Qualifications

Language and Certification

- Fluency in both Inuktitut and English (oral and written)
- One (1) year experience teaching in a bilingual or ESL environment
- Eligibility to obtain a Nunavut Teaching Certificate as a Language Specialist

Desired Qualifications

Candidates are not expected to meet every qualification; relevant experience and a commitment to community-centred education are valued.

Language and Cultural Assets

- Experience supporting Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit-based education.
- Experience teaching in cross-cultural, or northern-Canada contexts In the event that there is no successful qualified candidate, this position may be offered as a one-year term under Letter of Teaching Authority Certification.

Teaching Practice & Classroom Environment

- Experience working in K-12 classroom settings
- Evidence of courses taken towards educational certification
- Experience in differentiated instruction and inclusive practices
- Training or experience using current assessment methods to guide learning
- Experience in creating a positive learning environment using classroom management practices and approaches (e.g. Restitution, Tribes, Positives Effective Behavior Supports.)
- Training or experience in evidence-based literacy instruction, structured literacy, and data-based decision-making
- Experience using educational technology

Relationships & Student Engagement

- Experience in building respectful relationships with students, families, colleagues, and stakeholders
- Experience in fostering student wellbeing and engagement

Collaboration & Professional Practice

- Experience in planning instruction and student supports through collaborative approaches
- Experience working collaboratively as part of a team
- Experience learning and contributing in a shared, community-focused environment

Compensation and Benefits

- Salary Range:



$78,206 - $94,389 (based on experience)
- Nunavut Northern Allowance for Igloolik, Nunavut: $22,579
- Subsidized Housing: NOT available.

Conditions of Employment

- Applicants currently employed by the Government of Nunavut must hold a valid Nunavut teaching certificate.
- Applicants from outside Nunavut must provide a copy of a current public-school teaching certificate from a Canadian jurisdiction recognized by the

Nunavut Department of Education. Applications that do not include this documentation will not be considered.
