Reporting to the Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts (FoA), the Learning Strategist supports student transition, success, engagement, and retention at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) by coordinating student success programming and academic support initiatives. The position develops learning resources, oversees peer mentoring, supports transition and retention activities, and works with faculty, staff, and campus partners to provide responsive support for a diverse student population. Working closely with FoA administration, program chairs and coordinators, and campus partners, the Learning Strategist supports students in navigating academic success, transition, and EDII-related matters through programming, referrals, resources, strategies, and technologies that promote personal, social, and intellectual development.

Workload may fluctuate to meet student needs. The incumbent also coordinates special projects that support student success and retention, in collaboration with FoA leadership, Faculty of Student Development, Indigenous Student Development - Cplul'kw'ten, Indigenous Education, and TRU colleagues engaged in EDII work.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

- Collaborates with FoA leadership to plan, develop, coordinate, implement and evaluate EDII, learning support, proactive mentorship, transition, and retention programs for the Faculty of Arts.
- Researches, develops, and reviews mentorship programming and opportunities to align with TRU's Strategic Plan and departmental goals.
- Coordinates referrals, case support, and related documentation, ensuring appropriate consultation, escalation, data quality, privacy, FIPPA compliance, and alignment with EDII principles and TRU policy.
- Coordinates assignments, trains, supervises, mentors, and evaluates peer mentors, student leaders, and student staff, including peer-mentoring programs that enhance engagement and success.
- Develops, reviews, evaluates, and reports on student success programming using dashboards, attendance data, outreach conversions, enrollment trends, and retention signals to inform program decisions.
- Coaches, advises, and supports students on academic skills, study strategies,



university navigation, resources, policies, referrals, and appropriate support pathways.
- Develops resources and supports for diverse students, including equity-priority and equity-deserving groups.
- Collaborates with faculty, administrators, and campus partners to develop policies, processes, and coordinated approaches that support student success and development.
- Designs, organizes, and facilitates presentations, workshops, academic engagement activities, orientation, recruitment, Arts Cohort mixers, open-house events, and other Faculty of Arts initiatives that support student transition retention, and success.
- Builds community and university partnerships and participates in committees and working groups that advance student engagement, transition, retention, and success.
- Promotes Faculty of Arts’ student success programming internally and externally through communications, event representation, MarCom collaboration, updates, and related outreach.
- Participates in Arts Cohort planning, reviewing enrollment trends and recommending adjustments that support student progression and retention.
- Leads special projects and Dean-assigned initiatives that advance Faculty of Arts student success, engagement, transition, and retention priorities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

- Bachelor's degree in Education, Arts, or related field plus 2 years post-graduate studies leading to a certification/designation

EXPERIENCE:
- Three years’ experience working with students in a post-secondary institution or related workplace, including:
- Experience working with relational database software
- Experience working as part of team, specifically in a case management support team




- Experience with one-to-one tutoring/coaching
- Experience working on issues of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenization in a healthcare, community or educational setting

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB
- Demonstrated knowledge of the impact of colonialism, racism, and discrimination and EDII principles, and inclusive approaches to serving diverse students and their learning needs
- Knowledge of University policies, procedures, academic support best practices, and processes related to admission, registration, and applications for financial aid
- Knowledge of University policies, procedures relating to accommodation, discrimination, and harassment. Understanding of academic supports and transition initiatives
- Ability to establish priorities, organize, schedule, and report in a timely manner
- Ability to collaborate, problem solve and develop relationships with various stakeholders
- Proven ability to manage and coordinate multiple tasks and tasks of others
- Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies, work with confidential information, and apply FIPPA and necessary privacy standards
- Proven ability to use judgement to assess and coach students effectively and discreetly, including early-alert, triage, and complex-system navigation
- Excellent interpersonal, communications, collaboration, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills with diverse stakeholders
- Ability to plan, develop and execute events and various activities
- Ability to analyze and prepare budgets and report on financial activities
- Ability to review, evaluate and report (verbally and in writing) on activities
- Advanced computer knowledge including word processing, presentation, and database applications
- Demonstrated ability and commitment to serving diverse students and their learning needs

WORKING CONDITIONS
