Big Sky Rail operates from Delisle to Beechy and from the Macrorie area to Laporte. Through a running rights agreement with CN, BGS crews and equipment also have direct interchange access into CN's Chappell Yard in Saskatoon. BGS connects with affiliate railway Last Mountain Railway (LMR), extending our service across a broader regional network.
This is a hands-on railway operations role where you'll perform both Locomotive Engineer and Conductor duties as part of the BGS operating team.

Position Summary The Locomotive Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of locomotives and trains across the Big Sky Rail network and applicable running rights territory. In addition to operating as a Locomotive Engineer, this position performs Conductor duties as required, including switching, completing paperwork, connecting air hoses and performing brake tests.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate locomotives and trains across the Big Sky Rail network.
- Operate within applicable running rights territory, including movements into and out of CN's Chappell Yard in Saskatoon.
- Perform Conductor duties, including switching and the safe movement and placement of railcars.
- Couple and uncouple railcars and connect and disconnect air hoses.
- Perform required brake tests.
- Complete required railway paperwork and operating documentation.
- Understand and comply with applicable railway signals, operating rules and procedures.
- Work safely around locomotives, railcars and active railway operations.
- Communicate effectively with other crew members and railway personnel.
- Complete required equipment inspections and report safety or equipment concerns.
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues with locomotives and report identified issues as required.
Qualifications & Experience
- Grade 12 Diploma or GED required.
- Valid Driver's Licence required.
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a qualified Locomotive Engineer.
- Basic understanding of railway signals.
- Rule 105 training required.
- QSOC (Qualified Standards for Operating Crews) training required.
- Ability and willingness to perform both Locomotive Engineer and Conductor duties.
- Experience operating into and out of CN's Chappell Yard in Saskatoon is preferred.
- Strong commitment to safe railway operations.
Work Schedule & Travel
- This is an on-call, unionized position based on operational requirements.
- Guaranteed 70 hours per two-week pay period, with employees paid for actual hours worked when hours exceed the guarantee.
- Work is performed throughout the Big Sky Rail network and applicable running rights territory.
Pay: From $34.77 per hour
