Position Summary
Virtus Asset Management Inc. is seeking a Manager of Corporate Accounting and Taxation for a hands-on role covering accounting and tax compliance across its broader corporate portfolio — including management companies, alternative investment vehicles and businesses, and entities in the process of amalgamation or wind-down — alongside the Virtus Diversified Real Estate Investment Trust (VDREIT) structure. Reporting to the Director of Finance, this role personally prepares corporate tax filings, works directly with EY on tax planning for the REIT and other vehicles, and owns the month-end and year-end close for assigned entities. The role has no direct reports but provides mentorship to a property accounting staff of six.
The ideal candidate has 3–5 years of progressive experience at a mid-sized accounting firm or comparable mid-sized organization and is ready to step into a role with broad, hands-on scope across a varied corporate structure.
Key Responsibilities
- Personally prepare and file Canadian corporate tax returns and information returns (including T106, T1134, and T1135) across the corporate portfolio, coordinating with external tax advisors as needed.
- Work directly with EY on tax planning for the REIT and other investment vehicles within the structure.
- Own month-end and year-end close for a group of entities spanning management companies, alternative investment vehicles and businesses, and property-holding corporations, including preparation and review of journal entries, accruals, and account reconciliations.
- Support the amalgamation and wind-down of corporate entities, including related accounting entries, filings, and coordination with legal counsel.
- Prepare and review consolidated and entity-level financial statements under ASPE and IFRS, as applicable.
- Act as a key liaison with external auditors during interim and year-end audit fieldwork, including preparing working papers and resolving audit queries.
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to a property accounting staff of six, supporting their day-to-day work without formal supervisory reporting lines.
- Identify and implement process and control improvements across the close and tax compliance cycles.
- Support ad hoc projects, including entity restructurings, acquisitions/dispositions, and financial reporting for leadership.
Qualifications
- CPA designation preferred.
- 3–5 years of progressive accounting and tax experience, ideally gained at a mid-sized public accounting firm or mid-sized corporate finance/accounting team.
- Hands-on experience personally preparing financial statements and corporate tax returns, not solely reviewing the work of others.
- Solid working knowledge of Canadian corporate tax compliance; real estate or REIT tax experience is an asset.
- Working knowledge of ASPE and IFRS.
- Comfortable working hands-on across a varied corporate structure, including holding companies, alternative investment vehicles, and entities being wound down or amalgamated.
- A proactive, go-getter attitude with the initiative to take ownership and work independently.
- Advanced Excel skills and strong analytical ability.
- Robust organizational skills, attention to detail, and sound professional judgment.
- Clear communication skills, with comfort liaising with auditors, tax advisors, and senior stakeholders.
What Virtus Offers
