Shift and schedule: Weekday - 37.5 hrs/week The New Canadians Health Centre is currently recruiting for one Full Time Medical Office Assistant in Edmonton.
The New Canadians Health Centre provides coordinated and multidisciplinary refugee-centered primary health care for a target population of government assisted and privately sponsored refugees as well as refugee claimants. Informed by refugees’ priorities that are communicated through culturally, medically, and epidemiologically appropriate assessments, the supports create ready access to a comprehensive set of clinic and community services.
We are a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team of experienced family medicine physicians and specialists with expertise in refugee health, working side-by-side with nurses, mental health therapists, and settlement counsellors, aided by community support workers, cultural brokers, social workers, and cultural/language interpreters, to support healthy and productive new Canadians contributing to the social, cultural, and economic well-being of their communities.
The Medical Office Assistant always acts in the best interest of and with the NCHC community to attend to the following principles of the NCHC:

About the Role:
As a Medical Office Assistant (MOA), you will be an integral part of the program team ensuring that all day-to-day administrative requirements are met. You will be part of a compassionate team dedicated to welcoming and serving newcomer individuals and families.
Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Welcoming and checking in patients who self-refer and or who are referred by other service providers
- Answering phone calls, scheduling clinic appointments, managing faxes and email/mail
- Coordinating referrals
- Assisting with completing vital signs and medical procedures
- Attending general staff meetings and taking/preparing minutes as required
- Maintaining office equipment and ordering stationary supplies
- Supporting clients with health system navigation
- Maintaining health record file systems and preparing patient files
- Ensuring patient understanding and consent through the use of appropriate language supports such as in-person or over the phone interpreters
- Other duties as required
Qualifications and Requirements:
- High School Graduate (Grade 12)
- Graduate from an approved Unit Clerk Course, including Medical Terminology, or equivalent and/or acceptable previous experience
- Strong interpersonal, communication and public relation skills
- Excellent organizational skills
- Strong attitudes and skills that reflect community building and embrace diversity
- Comfortable working in a diverse, multicultural environment
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work under pressure and remain flexible with changing demands
- Ability to thrive in an ambiguous and changing environment
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to prioritize work and effectively work with frequent interruptions, noise and nearby distractions
- Ability to communicate effectively with others both verbally and in writing
- Detail oriented and strong interpersonal skills
- Able bridge communication barriers when patients are unable to communicate in English
- Abilities to take initiative, multitask and maintain confidentiality will be assets in this role
- Computer skills: proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and database systems is required
- Able to create warm, safe and inclusive spaces by valuing and recognizing the strengths and expertise of diverse community members we serve and other colleagues ∙ Familiarity with the pre- and post-migration realities and marginalization of newcomers and refugees is an asset. As well as the ability to integrate this knowledge this into everyday practice.
