NextGen CarLabs is hiring multiple part-time, casual/on-call Automotive Service Technicians. We will consider newly registered apprentices with limited experience, experienced apprentices and licensed journeyperson technicians.

This flexible opportunity may suit someone beginning an automotive career, attending apprenticeship training, already working elsewhere, transitioning toward retirement or looking to earn additional income when available.

Technicians may be contacted when work becomes available. Available work will depend on shop workload, the type of repair required, the technician’s abilities and the technician’s stated availability.

Automotive Responsibilities

Depending on training and demonstrated ability, duties may include:

- Performing oil changes and scheduled maintenance
- Completing tire, brake, steering and suspension work
- Performing cooling-system and general mechanical repairs
- Assisting an experienced technician with advanced repairs
- Diagnosing mechanical, electrical and drivability concerns within the technician’s abilities
- Performing inspections and accurately documenting findings
- Providing clear measurements, observations and repair recommendations
- Following approved repair procedures and manufacturer specifications
- Using shop equipment safely and responsibly
- Maintaining a clean and organized work area
- Protecting client vehicles and property
- Communicating promptly when additional problems are discovered
- Completing assigned work efficiently without sacrificing workmanship

Work will be assigned according to the technician’s apprenticeship level, training, experience and proven abilities. Apprentices will not be expected to perform work beyond their demonstrated competence. Client Communication and Service Responsibilities

NextGen CarLabs operates as a small, hands-on shop. All employees are expected to participate in client communication and basic service-advisor responsibilities rather than relying on another employee to handle every interaction.

Employees must be willing and able to:

- Answer incoming telephone calls professionally




- Speak directly with clients about their vehicle concerns
- Explain inspection findings and repair recommendations clearly
- Create accurate work orders and estimates using the shop-management system
- Contact clients to present estimates and obtain authorization
- Provide progress updates and advise clients of delays or additional findings
- Document conversations, authorizations and declined work accurately
- Coordinate vehicle pickup and payment when required

Training will be provided on the shop’s procedures and software. However, applicants must be comfortable communicating directly with clients and using a computer. These are core responsibilities of the position, not optional or occasional duties.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must be one of the following:

- A registered Automotive Service Technician apprentice in Alberta; or
- A licensed Automotive Service Technician journeyperson

Applicants must also have:
- A valid Class 5 driver’s licence
- Reliable transportation to and from the shop
- Basic automotive hand tools appropriate to their training and experience
- The physical ability to perform automotive repair work and lift up to 50 lb
- Dependable attendance and punctuality
- Clear verbal and written communication
- Basic computer skills and the ability to learn shop-management software
- Respect for client vehicles, shop equipment and coworkers
- A commitment to protected, professional-quality work

The shop provides hoists, diagnostic and programming equipment, and specialty tools required for approved work. Compensation The wage range is $17.00–$42.00 per hour.

The starting wage offered will be based on:

- Apprenticeship level or journeyperson certification
- Previous automotive repair experience
- Types of work the applicant can complete competently
- Ability to work accurately and independently
- Productivity and quality of workmanship
- Diagnostic ability and specialized skills




- Client communication and documentation abilities
- Tools and capabilities brought to the position

The lower end of the range applies to newly registered apprentices with limited practical experience. The upper end is reserved for qualified, experienced technicians who can diagnose, estimate and complete a broad range of work independently.

Hours and Availability

This is a part-time, casual and as-needed/on-call position. Technicians may be contacted when work becomes available based on shop workload, the type of repair required and the technician’s demonstrated capabilities.

Available work may include

- Weekday shifts
- Evening shifts
- Saturdays and Sundays
- Short-notice coverage
- Prearranged project or repair work

There is no mandatory standby requirement. Technicians may accept or decline offered shifts based on their availability. Once a shift or job is accepted, dependable attendance and completion of the agreed work are required. Hours may vary from week to week, and no minimum number of hours is guaranteed.
