Part-Time Stewardship Restoration Technician

The Tsartlip First Nation is pleased to invite applicants to apply to the fixed term, part time Stewardship Restoration Technician position until February 1, 2027.

The Stewardship Restoration Technician will support Tsartlip-led restoration and stewardship activities that care for W̱SÁNEĆ lands and waters. The role will include field-based restoration work, invasive plant removal, native planting, site maintenance, community events, school engagement, monitoring, and supporting additional stewardship activities as directed.

The wage for this position is $28 per hour.

Education and Experience

- Be a Tsartlip or W̱SÁNEĆ community member, or have a strong respect for W̱SÁNEĆ lands, waters, and community priorities;
- Be interested in environmental stewardship, restoration, native plants, fish and wildlife habitat, or land based learning;
- Be comfortable working outdoors in different weather conditions;
- Be able to complete physical fieldwork, including lifting, carrying, digging, pulling plants, using hand tools, and walking on uneven ground;
- Be reliable, respectful, and able to work well as part of a team;
- Be willing to learn restoration techniques, plant identification,



invasive species management, and field documentation;
- Be comfortable supporting community events, volunteer days, and youth or school-based activities;
- Have experience with restoration, landscaping, gardening, invasive species removal, fieldwork, construction, or similar hands-on work. This is considered an asset, but not required;
- Bring W̱SÁNEĆ knowledge, land-based experience, community knowledge, formal training, or practical work experience. All forms of relevant knowledge and experience will be valued;
- Experience operating power boats up to 15 tons or 12 meters or willingness to undergo training;
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and reliable vehicle plus a clean driver’s abstract and appropriate insurance will be an asset;
- Clean criminal record check required.

Key Responsibilities The Stewardship Restoration Technician may support the following activities:

- Remove invasive plants such as reed canary grass, Himalayan blackberry, purple loosestrife, and other priority invasive species;
- Support native planting in riparian, wetland, and culturally important plant areas;
- Collaborate with project partners, such as Peninsula Streams and Shorelines;
- Help plant and maintain a culturally important garden;
- Assist with site preparation, planting layout, watering, mulching, and plant maintenance;
- Support habitat enhancement work, including wetland and stream restoration activities where appropriate;
- Support community planting days, volunteer events, school visits,



and public stewardship activities;
- Assist with awareness materials and site-based education;
- Help organize and support a community celebration or project wrap-up event at MÁWUEĆ;
- Take photos, field notes, and basic records to document restoration progress;
- Support mapping and monitoring of restoration work, invasive species removal areas, and planted areas;
- Work respectfully with Tsartlip staff, W̱SÁNEĆ community members, Elders, youth, schools, contractors, partner organizations, and volunteers;
- Participate in training related to restoration, invasive species control, native plants, habitat stewardship, and field safety;
- Install and maintain fencing or other protective materials around restoration areas and nursery plants;
- Help install bird and bat houses to support cavity-nesting birds and bats;
- Complete other related duties as assigned by the Stewardship Department.

Located on the west side of the Saanich Peninsula (south east Vancouver Island), the W̱SÁNEĆ people have lived on these lands since time immemorial. We have a population of 1038 registered members living both on and off Tsartlip First Nation territory.

Tsartlip 653 is comprised of Goldstream IR13, Mayne Island IR6, Senanus Island IR10 and South Saanich IR1 covering approximately 334 hectares in size and includes single family residential and leased homes, band administrations and commercial developments.
