As the business continues to grow, they are seeking a Payroll & Benefits Specialist to join their Human Resources team in a newly created position. This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of Canadian payroll operations while supporting U.S. payroll activities and administering benefits programs across North America.
Your New Role
Reporting to the HR leadership team, the Payroll & Benefits Specialist will be responsible for managing payroll and benefits administration for employees across Canada and the United States. The successful candidate will serve as the primary resource for Canadian payroll, provide backup support for U.S. payroll processing, and oversee employee benefits programs while ensuring compliance with all applicable legislation.
Key responsibilities include
- Administer full-cycle payroll for salaried and hourly employees across Canada, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely processing.
- Serve as the primary payroll resource for Canadian operations and provide backup support for U.S. payroll processing.
- Manage payroll and benefits administration for approximately 90 salaried employees across Canada and the United States, as well as a seasonal workforce of more than 140 contractors during peak periods.
- Oversee employee perks programs across both countries, including enrolments, terminations, life event changes,
annual renewals, and claims administration.
- Act as the primary liaison between employees and external benefits providers, resolving inquiries and supporting a positive employee experience.
- Administer and coordinate benefits programs with Sun Life (Canada) and Cigna, Unum, and Empower 401(k) (United States).
- Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, state, and local payroll and benefits regulations.
- Support payroll audits, reconciliations, reporting, and continuous process improvement initiatives.
- Partner closely with HR, Finance, payroll vendors, and external service providers to ensure seamless payroll and benefits administration across North America.
- Maintain accurate employee payroll and benefits records while safeguarding confidential information and ensuring data integrity.
What You Need to Do This is a hands-on role requiring strong payroll and benefits experience in both Canada and the United States. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and confident in managing complex payroll environments while building strong relationships across the organization.
What You'll Need to Succeed:
- 5+ years of payroll and benefits administration experience.
- Strong experience managing Canadian payroll.
- Experience supporting or processing U.S. payroll.
- Hands-on experience administering Canadian and U.S. employee benefits programs.
- Multi-jurisdictional payroll experience across Canada and the United States.
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, deductions, remittances, and compliance requirements.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
- Experience with payroll systems such as ADP is considered an asset.
- Strong communication skills and the confidence to build credibility and influence across the business.
