Indigenous Graduation Coach/Kendaaswin Ekiitang
Full-time, permanent As part of a team, the Kendaaswin Ekiitang (Indigenous Graduation Coach) will provide support to Indigenous learners with the goal of obtaining an Ontario Secondary School Diploma and successfully transitioning into post-secondary education, training or labour market opportunities.
The Graduation
Coach focuses on relationship building and mentoring and will support transitions, culture, career planning, academics and parent engagement. The successful candidate will build positive relationships with Indigenous students by identifying barriers and solutions to student learning, engagement and well-being. In addition, the candidate will collaborate with school staff, parents, Indigenous community partners and outside agencies to build networks and supports to foster success for students.
The candidate will play a lead role in assisting staff members to improve achievement, well-being and graduation rates for Indigenous students.
Essential Qualifications University degree in Indigenous Social Work, Indigenous Studies, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, working with and supporting Indigenous youth. Lived experience will be considered.
Experience Required - Experience working with Indigenous youth and families (minimum of 2 years)
- Experience with the Indigenous Holistic Lifelong Learning model
- A valid driver's license and the willingness and ability to travel for school board related business Skills and Knowledge - Knowledge of Indigenous traditional teachings, cultures, perspectives, values, and history, and a deep connection to the local Indigenous community
- Awareness of local Indigenous community resources and ability to connect students and families to these resources
- Ability to be a mentor, role model and an advisor to Indigenous students
- Strong organizational and communication skills, proficient computer skills and a willingness to be adaptable
- Ability to collect relevant student data and use it to inform planning for success
- Ability to interpret data to communicate progress and needs of students
- Superior ability to motivate students to stay engaged in learning by getting to know students and facilitating engagement
- Initiative, accountability, patience, integrity and flexibility
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team The following are considered an asset - Experience working in an education setting
