Piano Teacher — Independent Contractor

Alta Vista Music School is a new music education initiative being developed in Ottawa, with the goal of creating a welcoming, skilled and comprehensive environment for students of all ages and levels.

We are currently looking for an experienced and dedicated Piano Teacher to join our initial teaching team as an independent contractor. This is an opportunity to become part of the school during its early development and contribute to building a high-quality music education program from the ground up.

Our approach combines individualized instruction with a broader understanding of musicianship, including music theory, repertoire, performance, creativity and progressive musical development. Depending on their goals, students may follow a flexible private-lesson pathway, a structured music program, or preparation for formal examinations such as the Royal Conservatory (RCM) program.

Position The successful candidate will provide individual piano instruction to students of varying ages and levels, from beginners to more advanced students.

Responsibilities may include

- Teaching individual piano lessons according to each student's level, goals and learning style
- Preparing lessons and appropriate repertoire
- Developing students' technical, musical and theoretical skills
- Communicating professionally with students and parents
- Providing constructive feedback and maintaining a positive learning environment
- Preparing students for RCM examinations when applicable
- Participating in student recitals, auditions and other school activities when appropriate
- Maintaining professional communication and reliable scheduling




- Following the school's general educational and qualified standards while maintaining your own teaching approach and expertise

Qualifications and Experience We are looking for a professional musician and educator who takes teaching seriously and enjoys working with students.

Required:

- Strong piano performance and teaching skills
- Previous experience teaching piano
- Professional and reliable approach to teaching and communication
- Ability to work with children and/or adults
- Commitment to maintaining a positive and respectful learning environment

Preferred:

- Formal education in music, piano performance, music education or a related field
- A university, conservatory or other recognized music qualification/certificate
- Experience working with students preparing for auditions or formal examinations

We are particularly interested in candidates who have a strong musical foundation and who are comfortable teaching beyond simply learning songs, including technique, musicianship, reading, theory and musical understanding. The school is being developed with a long-term vision of combining high-quality music education with a small cultural and artistic community. Our initial focus will be on building a strong core of students and teachers, with additional programs and artistic activities introduced progressively as the school grows.
