Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager, the Cooks Helper or Junior Cook is responsible for assisting the Chef and/or Cooks with food preparation, portioning, cleaning, and meal service.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Assists the Chef and/or Cooks in preparing food by performing any combination of following duties: washing, peeling, cutting, and removing seeds from fruits and vegetables.
- Under the direction of the Manager, Chef and/or Cooks assists in meal service by prepping the garnish and plating the meals.
- Follows menu and prepares all fresh fruits and vegetables on the daily menu using procedures following all applicable regulations in accordance with the corporate HACCP plan.
- Prepares baked goods, including cookies, loaves, and daily desserts, as per site requirements.
- Follows baking recipes and Chef Manager instructions, as per site requirements.
- Assists the Chef and/or Cooks with baking production and catering needs, as per site requirements.
- Assists the Chef Manager with baking production and catering needs on site.
- Using proper body mechanics to unpack and store supplies.
- Maintains work and storage areas in a clean, safe, and sanitary manner.
- Washes, cleans, and stores small wares, pots, pans, and equipment used for food preparation and service.
- Operates and cleans food service equipment and kitchen stations.
- Prepares food items and assembles ready foods for meal trays.
- Portions and garnishes desserts for dining room service.
- Prepares raw vegetables, salads, and cold sandwiches for meal service.
- Light food preparation, portioning and plating.
- Demonstrates knowledge of fire/emergency procedures and policies of the facility; participates in fire and emergency drills.
- Demonstrates knowledge and application of elder and staff safety.
- All safety rules and safe work procedures are adhered to at all times.
- Reports all hazards, incidents, near misses and workplace injuries to the manager immediately and in writing.
- Does not participate in unsafe situations (horseplay) and corrects any unsafe conditions if able.
- Actively participates in all health and safety initiatives and make suggestions to improve workplace health and safety.
- Adheres to infection control practices.
- Operates necessary equipment.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Mandatory Qualifications Must be able to communicate in English, both written and verbal.
Holds and Maintains valid Food Save Level 1 Certificate.
Must have a working knowledge of HACCP.
Holds and Maintains Valid WHMIS Certificate.
A negative TB test or chest x-ray within the last six months or ability to pass TB clearance documents.
Successfully clears and maintains, as required by company and facility, an appropriate background/criminal record check in accordance with licensing regulations; Re-submits such as required ore every five years.
Provide signed annual mandatory declaration of criminal records.
Favoured Qualifications
Previous experience in complex care and/or senior’s living environment and/or previous food service establishment experience.
Working knowledge of special diets and varied dietary needs.
Working Conditions
Physical Demands
Ability to stand and walk for majority of working hours, maneuver quickly in confined spaces.
Handling crates of ingredients, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment, required to be able to lift and carry up to 25lbs.
Holds excellent manual dexterity, coordination and fine motor skills, able to safely work with kitchen equipment, work in environments that involve high exposure to heat, steam and cold through cooking and storage units.
- Handling &/or storing potent cleaning agents, with being exposed to such.
Able to complete repetitive tasks using hands and wrists such as chopping, slicing, and mixing. Able to bend, stoop, and twist.
Able to effectively make decisions in a timely manner.

Pay: $29.24-$29.72 per hour
